One of Marvel's most recognizable franchises and arguably the one which led to the rebirth of superhero cinema, Spider-Man definitely has a special place in the hearts of comic book aficionados. Even those who don't enjoy the action-packed pages of superheroes and Kirby dots can usually find something to enjoy in the web-slinging super's cinematic catalog.

A bevy of talented actors combined with stunning visual effects and breathtaking music makes a winning combination that's present in all eight theatrical Spider-Man films. Here's some brief information on each, including a basic plot summary, box office/critical response data, and where you can watch them online.

Spider-Man (2002)

Spider-Man 2002

While superhero films are commonplace nowadays, back in the early 2000s they were an extreme rarity. However, Marvel decided to take a risk with 2002's Spider-Man, which follows geeky highschooler Peter Parker as he's bitten by a radioactive spider, gaining superhuman abilities that he eventually uses to become a hero. He'll also have to navigate his cloudy relationships, as the death of his beloved uncle has dealt a harsh blow and his secret double life makes it even harder for him to connect with others.

The film received positive reviews, with critics praising the visual effects, directing, action sequences, and Tobey Maguire's performance as Spider-Man. It generated a large amount of hype up until the time of its release and became an unexpected blockbuster, making more than $820 million on a budget of about $140 million. Retrospectively, many film historians have lauded it as having made the superhero genre a cultural mainstay, paving the way for big-budget sagas like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

In Spider-Man 2, two years after he saved the world and got the girl, Peter Parker is still having difficulties balancing his personal life with his hero duties, and this has led to a disconnect from his friends. Meanwhile, a horrible nuclear experiment kills Dr. Otto Octavius' wife, leaving him fused to robotic tentacles powered by AI. Over time, this leads to the OsCorp scientist becoming a veritable criminal mastermind - and more than a worthy opponent for Spider-Man.

While the film could have simply piggybacked on the success of the original and done all the same things over again, it instead decided to deliver something new and fresh, and for that reason, many consider it one of the best superhero movies of all time. It was also a box office success, delivering $789 million on a $200 million budget and securing Tobey Maguire's place in Hollywood history.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Venom chokes Spider-Man in Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3 finds the titular do-gooder taking on a trio of villains. These include Parker's once-best-friend Harry Osborn, who is seeking vengeance for the death of his father, supervillain Green Goblin; the Sandman, Uncle Ben's killer and a shapeshifter disfigured by an accident; and later, Eddie Brock, a freelance photographer and Parker's rival, who becomes Venom when he fuses with an alien symbiote that had previously corrupted Parker himself.

It wasn't as critically successful as its predecessors, with review outlets praising the directing, acting, and visuals but criticizing the storyline and tone, and Marvel buffs generally agree it was the least compelling offering of a trilogy. Despite this factor, as well as the monster $258 million budget (a total which made it the most expensive film ever made at the time of release), the film still ruled the box office, making $895 million worldwide.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

The franchise was rebooted with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, which replays the origin story of the web-slinging super but with a few changes, making Gwen Stacy (who only appeared briefly in Spider-Man 3) Parker's main love interest and pitting Spider-Man against The Lizard, a nine-foot-tall reptilian foe.

Critics, for the most part, enjoyed this superhero tale; while Andrew Garfield might be the least-known Spider-Man out of the three, his charisma makes him a near-equal to even Maguire, and his natural chemistry with actress Emma Stone (who plays Gwen Stacy) gives the film a more upbeat tone than what the franchise's previous installments tried for. The film's visuals, directing, and music were all praised, and it went on to make more than $750 million on a budget of around $200-230 million.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

In Spider-Man's fifth theatrical appearance, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, things are no easier for him than in the first; OsCorp enemies threaten the peaceful visage of New York City, and his life is as hectic and strained as ever. At one moment, he's dealing with the skilled and almost overpowered Electro, the next his longtime friend Harry Osborn - now the supervillain Green Goblin.

While it's perhaps the least-recognized film centered on Spider-Man, it still has quite a few memorable moments and was, execution-wise, mostly successful. Critical reviews were mixed, with many continuing to praise the combination of Garfield and Stone, and also citing the music, visuals, and cinematography as points in the film's favor - although some were soured on the jumbled plotline and surplus of supervillains. Box-office-wise, Marvel easily proved its reputation as an entertainment titan, as this entry made an undeniably impressive $709 million on a budget around $255 million.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

The second reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise, Spider-Man: Homecoming was made as a way of introducing the titular superhero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this installment, Peter Parker becomes a low-ranking member of the Avengers, as he draws influence from others during his superhero journey - particularly his quasi-mentor Tony Stark. What he's learned is put to the test when he faces off against a small-time criminal planning a big-time arms heist.

Getting Spider-Man in the MCU was a big deal for a lot of people, and the film finished its box office run slightly above expectations at $880 million, on a $175 million budget. Like audiences, critics were also on its side, as many loved this lighter (but still action-packed) iteration of the Spider-Man story.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

Into the Spider Verse Spiderlings

Marvel decided to give animation another go, teaming up with Sony Pictures Animation to make Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film doesn't tell the origin story of Peter Parker, but instead focuses on fan-favorite Miles Morales, as the spider-bitten superhero has to learn how to use his abilities while trying to get a bevy of dimensionally-displaced superheroes back to their respective worlds.

A surprise success, the film received near-universal acclaim for its directing, acting, animation, plot, and humor, with some critics naming it as the best Spider-Man film to date. Like Big Hero 6, it also went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. And while it couldn't match Marvel's live-action offerings at the box office, it was still a clear success, making more than $375 million on a budget of just $90 million.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

MJ and Spider-Man

The follow-up to what is now the highest-grossing movie of all time (Avengers: Endgame), Spider-Man: Far From Home was going to make or break Marvel's third phase. It follows Peter Parker, chilling with his classmates on a school trip to Europe when he's called on by the Nick Fury, the man who brought together the Avengers, to take down a group of virtual monsters known as the Elementals. The film was almost universally praised as a worthy continuation of the Spider-Man story, with Tom Holland and Zendaya's chemistry uniting fans, and the action, cinematography, visuals, and story satisfying critics.

Going above and beyond box office expectations by making more than $1.1 billion (on a budget of just $160 million) was just one of the ways this film helped prove that the MCU is still a driving force in cinema.
