A Punchy Plot

Amara and Adonis training in Creed III

Creed II follows the story of Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), years after audiences saw him rise to the top of the boxing game in the first Creed movie. All is great in Creed’s life; he’s the Heavyweight Champion of the World and has proposed to the woman of his dreams, Bianca (Tessa Thompson). His seemingly perfect world comes crashing down, however, when Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and his son come to town. Drago is a former Soviet boxer who killed Creed’s father in the boxing ring thirty-three years prior.

Drago’s son challenges Creed to a boxing match. Creed’s mentor is Rocky Balboa, who advises him against participating in this challenge. He goes against his advice and ends up participating in a rough match that results in him winning only due to a technicality. This leaves Creed wanting to stay out of the ring, and his journey navigating this is explored throughout the film.

Rocky Connection

Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa screams at Creed in the gym In Creed

You might have been scratching your head earlier when reading that Creed’s mentor is the famed Rocky Balboa. To address any confusion, all of the Creed movies are spin-offs and sequels of the Rocky franchise. That means that there are currently nine total movies that take place in the same cinematic world as Rocky. These include Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago, Rocky V, Rocky Balboa, Creed, Creed II, and Creed III.

Another Creed Movie?

It seems like fans cannot get enough of movies featuring fiery young boxers. And, thankfully, it doesn’t seem like they have to make due with a limited number. A new Creed film, Creed III, was released on March 3, 2023. This third movie allows fans to see Creed continue to fight his way through life in a new way.

In this movie, Creed is doing well in his career and with his family. His childhood friend, Damian, reappears into his life and begins to shake things up for Creed. After Damian’s release from prison, he wants to return to his roots as a boxing prodigy and get back in the ring. The two former friends now are engaging in a face-off that could cost Creed everything while leaving Damian unscathed.

Fans were surprised that this movie was made, after Sylvester Stallone announced he was retiring from the iconic role of Rocky Balboa. This is the first ever Rocky film to not include Stallone, and it seems he did not leave on good terms with the team.

He explained that he never plans on watching Creed III and will not support any future Creed films that producer, Irwin Winkler, is involved in. Why the bad blood between him and Winkler? Stallone sold the rights to Rocky in 1976 to Winkler due to the fact that he was severely strapped for cash and needed to survive. He thinks that the creation of another film without his knowledge is parasitic and is just “picking clean the bones of another wonderful character I created.”

He further explains that his frustration with the situation does not come from a place of monetary desire. For him, it’s all about his creative legacy. He candidly shared his thoughts, saying “I wrote it. I thought it would be nice to say, ‘Here’s the gesture darling here. Beautiful children, beautiful wife. When I’m long gone, this is you. This is what I made for you.”
