If Trainers are looking to evolve their Petilil or Sunkern in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, they will need an Evolution Item known as the Sun Stone. As its name suggests, this recurring object of the franchise is shaped like a mini-sun and is typically used for evolving pocket monsters related to Grass. Unfortunately, since the Sun Stone is not among the four original evolutionary stones from Generation I, they are not available for purchase at the Delibird Presents shops across the region. However, there are two locations where Trainers are guaranteed to obtain the Sun Stones they need for their Grass-related evolutions.

The first guaranteed means of obtaining a Sun Stone in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is by searching for a particular Poké Ball within the mountain ranges of West Province (Area One). After crossing the bridge north of the nearby Pokémon Center, Trainers must follow the dirt trail leading to the northeast. However, before descending the winding road down the slope, players must investigate the small grassy area to the right of the main path. Then, head between the two rocks and through the small ravine to find a scenic lookout point with the Poké Ball containing a Sun Stone.

Sun Stone Map Location and Sunflora Gym Test NPC in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

The second ensured source of Sun Stones in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is the Artazon Gym Test. To start this quest, Trainers must travel far east of Mesagoza to the South Province (Area Three), where they will find a town with a large windmill known as Artazon. After arrival, head to the local Gym and speak with the receptionist to begin the Gym Test minigame: "Seek out the Sunflora of Artazon." As the objective suggests, Trainers are to comb the town in search of ten Sunfloras. Once they have been rounded up, players will receive multiple Sun Stones for their efforts.

A third less reliable method to get Sun Stones in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is participating in auctions at the Auction House in Porto Marinada. PowerPyx states that this feature becomes accessible once players have taken down the Level 19 Open Sky Titan to unlock the ability to traverse the water. This ability grants access to new areas, including West Province (Area Two). However, keep in mind that the items available in the Auction House are randomized and change daily. Therefore, there is no guarantee that Trainers will get a Sun Stone unless they check in for the daily deals. Nevertheless, once Trainers have acquired the stones they desire, they can use them to evolve the aforementioned Grass-type pocket monsters in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet:

  • Give Sunkern a Sun Stone to evolve it into Sunflora.
  • Give Petilil a Sun Stone to evolve it into Lilligant.
