Why Thor: Love & Thunder Doesn't Reveal Gorr's Planet Or Species

Gorr the God Butcher's origins were curiously never revealed in Thor: Love & Thunder. Christian Bale portrayed Gorr in the most recent Thor installment, which detailed the God Butcher's renouncement of the gods and quest to eliminate them from existence. While Gorr is still a fairly new villain in Marvel Comics, he has already been pitted against Thor several times and has almost succeeded in his quest to kill all gods. Even though Gorr's intentions in Love & Thunder are perfectly clear, not much is revealed about his life before his acquiring of the god-killing Necrosword, instead leaving the character's planet of origin and species a complete mystery.

Marvel Studios had the perfect opportunity to flesh out Gorr the God Butcher's backstory in Thor: Love & Thunder, since the character's origins in Marvel Comics are as ambiguous as Bale's character in the film. In both the comics and Love & Thunder, Gorr's origins are yet to be revealed, but it's the mystery surrounding the villain that makes him so terrifying. Revealing his species or planet of origin could have solidified the character more in the world of the MCU, but the fact that he is a completely unknown being makes Gorr seem much more formidable when going toe-to-toe with the likes of Thor, Valkyrie, and Jane Foster, aka Mighty Thor.

Gorr's Origin In Marvel Comics Explained

Created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic, Gorr the God Butcher debuted in Marvel Comics in 2013's run of Thor: God of Thunder #2. Akin to Thor: Love & Thunder, Gorr's species is never named, and he comes from a barren and nameless world ravaged by earthquakes and drought. The people of Gorr's world have blind faith in the gods, despite them never doing anything to aid in their suffering. When Gorr's wife, children, and mother die, he loses his faith in the gods, becoming an outcast in his community and vowing to eradicate all gods from existence. After witnessing the God of the Symbiotes, Knull, creator of All-Black the Necrosword, in battle with a god, Gorr acquired the weapon and set out on his quest. Gorr becomes a powerful adversary against Thor, eventually creating the Godbomb that would have allowed him to complete his mission, only to be thwarted by Thor.

Thor: Love & Thunder Is Right Not To Reveal Gorr's Species

While Thor: Love & Thunder could have been the perfect place to give Gorr the God Butcher a more substantive backstory, the fact that his origins were still kept completely ambiguous helped to make the character all the more threatening. Gorr was used as an allegory for many more beings across the universe who felt as though their gods had abandoned them. Gorr became a somewhat-relatable figure, stumbling by coincidence across the tool that would allow him to avenge the loss of his daughter, Love (portrayed by India Hemsworth). The fact that his species and planet of origin are never named emphasizes the point that he is one of many, he could be anybody fighting for vengeance against the apathetic gods.

The end of Thor: Love & Thunder saw Gorr the God Butcher finally succumb to the effects of the Necrosword, though his wish at Eternity's altar created his MCU legacy after his daughter was resurrected. It's unlikely that the formidable villain will be seen again, and even more unlikely that audiences will get any backstory for Gorr beyond what was seen during Thor: Love & Thunder. Despite this, since Thor has adopted Love, it's possible that Gorr's daughter will be in the MCU for years to come.
