A new trailer for the Where The Crawdads Sing film adaptation teases murder, mystery, and a complicated romance. Where The Crawdads Sing is based on the best-selling novel by Delia Owens about a North Carolina girl named Kya, nicknamed "The Marsh Girl," who learns to survive in the marshes as a child and struggles to fit into the "civilized" world as she gets older. Eventually, Kya is involved in love triangle that spirals into an accusation of murder, pitting her against the sheriff, the court, and the town. To date, the novel has sold over 12 million copies, making it one of the best selling books of all time, garnering the attention of Hollywood.
Reese Witherspoon acts as executive producer on the feature adaptation, which is directed by Olivia Newman and written by Lucy Alibar (Beasts of the Southern Wild). Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People, Fresh) stars as Kya, with Taylor John Smith as Tate and Harris Dickinson as Chase Andrews, the two male characters who fight for Kya's affections. Where The Crawdads Sing also stars Garrett Dillahunt and David Strathairn, and features a new Taylor Swift song on its soundtrack, entitled "Carolina," as the singer is a fan of the book and sought to contribute to the adaptation.
In a new trailer for Where The Crawdads Sing (via Sony), the whimsical, haunting, and mysterious events of the book play out with a sense of urgency and passion, giving fans a deeper look at the feature-film adaptation. The lush landscapes of North Carolina play a major role in the look of the film, which focuses on the love triangle and murder-mystery aspects of the tale. Readers of the original book will no doubt spot numerous beats and lines of dialogue from the novel scattered throughout the trailer, as well as a tease of Swift's original song for the film. Where The Crawdads Sing has quickly become a popular must-read novel, which prompted Witherspoon to add it to Reese's Book Club before securing the film rights. To date, the book has spent over 150 weeks on the bestseller list and was number one on Amazon's Most Sold Books in fiction list for 2019. The film adaptation production took place in Louisiana and wrapped production in June 2021 before shuffling release dates and finally landing on July 15, 2022 for its exclusive theatrical debut.
While Where The Crawdads Sing caters to a specific book-club style audience, that aspect shouldn't be underestimated as the appeal is massive, especially when considering the book sales and continued popularity. While superheroes and spectacle rule the box office, the genuine interest and hunger for murder/mystery and romance-themed projects are not lost on viewers. Coupled with the backing of Witherspoon, Swift, and a strong, young cast, Where The Crawdads Sing could very well be the sleeper hit of the summer.
