The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s new movie Oppenheimer will reportedly be shown first in theaters as it will be attached to Jordan Peele’s Nope, but when will it be released online? Christopher Nolan has earned the praise of critics and viewers over the years thanks to his peculiar narrative and visual style that has made his movies stand out, along with the themes he often addresses in them, such as memory, identity, time, and even dreams, as he did in Inception back in 2010.

As such, there’s always speculation and anticipation around Christopher Nolan’s projects, and after the critical success of Tenet, Nolan is leaving the sci-fi genre aside and focusing on biographical drama with Oppenheimer. Based on the book American Prometheus, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer tells the story of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project, and his contributions that led to the creation of the atomic bomb. Also starring are Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock.

Production on Oppenheimer began in February 2022 as the movie is scheduled for a July 21, 2023 release, and even though it’s still a year away, the first trailer is now ready for the world to see – but not for everyone just yet. According to some reports, the first trailer for Oppenheimer has recently been given an age-rating classification for theatrical distribution, meaning that it’s close to being released, and it has been reportedly attached to Jordan Peele’s Nope, which is coming to theaters on July 22.

When Will The Oppenheimer Trailer Be Released Online?

Cillian Murphy Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer is Nolan’s first movie not to be distributed by Warner Bros. due to disagreements over the studio’s simultaneous theatrical and streaming release strategy for their 2021 slate, but that doesn’t mean that Oppenheimer will have a different release plan than previous Nolan movies. Just like with some of his previous works, Oppenheimer’s trailer will debut first in theaters and will be later released online for the rest of the world to enjoy – however, if it follows the same plan as Tenet, viewers will have to be patient. Tenet’s first trailer was also released in theaters first (ahead of Hobbs & Shaw) in August 2019, and it wasn’t officially released online until December 2019. Oppenheimer, then, could follow the same plan, and if it does, then the trailer won’t be available to watch online until November or December 2022.

Why Christopher Nolan Releases Movie Trailers In Theaters First

Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer movie recover from Tenets

Christopher Nolan has been very open about his love for the full theatrical experience and his disagreement over releasing movies on streaming either by skipping a theatrical release or having a simultaneous one, as has happened in recent years. Speaking to Variety in 2017, Nolan compared straight-to-video releases with streaming ones, saying there’s “nothing new about it” and the only difference is “selling it to Wall Street as innovation or disruption”, and that as a filmmaker, “your nightmare was the straight-to-video release”. Christopher Nolan’s decision to release the trailers of his movies in theaters first and online months later is all about his love and support for the theatrical experience, which he will always favor over home video formats, even if in some special cases, like the COVID-19 pandemic, these were the best solution for many studios.
