Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the first Netflix film to be released across all three major US theatrical chains, as well as international chains, begging the question of when the film will be available on the streaming service. Glass Onion is a spiritual successor to 2019's Knives Out, following another secluded mystery of Benoit Blanc. The film will star Daniel Craig in the lead role, alongside an ensemble cast consisting of Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, and Madelyn Cline.

With a cast as stacked as this, and the mind behind the film's camera, it was expected that Rian Johnson's Glass Onion receive the eventual week-long theatrical release, confirmed to be starting November 23rd worldwide. The film though, will not release on Netflix until a month later, on December 23rd, 2022. The reasoning for this stems from the deal made with Netflix and Rian Johnson, as well as the first film's respectable performance at the box office.

Why Glass Onion Is Releasing On Netflix (When Knives Out Didn't)

Rian Johnson Glass Onion

The first Knives Out film was released in 2019 to exceptional reviews and a very respectable haul at the worldwide box office. The first film was co-produced by Lionsgate Films and MRC, explaining the film's theatrical release. After the success of Knives Out, a sequel was greenlit in 2020. A year later, in March 2021, it was revealed that Netflix had outbid both Amazon and Apple at an auction to acquire rights for the sequel, as well as a Knives Out 3 film, for $469 million.

This deal is the main reason why Glass Onion is receiving a release on Netflix, with the streaming service spending a massive amount of money to acquire the rights for the sequel. The deal saw the confirmation of two Knives Out sequels, both written and directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daniel Craig. The first of these, Glass Onion, was given a theatrical release for a week beginning November 23rd before releasing worldwide on Netflix a month later, explaining the difference between the first film.

One of the main reasons why Glass Onion's release date is perfect is because of the holiday period. While not a typical Christmas movie for 2022, through not being set at Christmas or featuring any link to the holiday, the fun, energetic style of the film will surely allow it to be highly streamed over the holiday period. The film's premise and impressive cast will make it popular regardless, but being placed right before the Christmas period will surely make Glass Onion a huge success, with many families coming together for Christmas to watch the exciting Netflix release.
