Amazon’s The Wheel of Time show has been renewed for season 2 just as season 1 wraps filming. Penned by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time series spanned 14 novels and became one of the best-selling fantasy series since J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Hailed for its detailed imaginary world, complex characters, and impeccably developed magic system, The Wheel of Time centers on Moiraine Damodred, a member of the all-female organization the Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a perilous mission. In 2018, Amazon rattled the fantasy world when it announced it would give the Wheel of Time show a series order.
Helmed by Rafe Judkins, The Wheel of Time has been in production since 2019. However, filming was halted last year due to coronavirus concerns. Featuring a massive cast, including Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, Daniel Henney as al'Lan Mandragoran, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, and Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, The Wheel of Time season 1 is expected to consist of eight episodes and doesn't yet have an official release date. While other vital details about Amazon’s adaptation have remained shrouded in mystery, The Wheel of Time has attempted to keep viewers in the loop by offering nuggets of intel from the show. These include a glance at Emond’s Field in the Two Rivers and the first look at Pike as Moiraine. Now, it appears Amazon plans to keep the wheel spinning for its upcoming fantasy series.
Posted by The Wheel of Time on Twitter, a script image reveals Amazon has renewed the show for season 2. Titled "A Taste of Solitude," episode 1 of season 2 is written by Amanda Kate Shuman. The renewal of the fantasy series arrives on the heels of season 1 wrapping production in the Czech Republic. Speaking on The Wheel of Time coming back for season 2, Judkins expressed his excitement to have an opportunity to expand the Wheel of Time world. Judkins said:
The belief Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have shown in The Wheel of Time has been incredible to see throughout the entire process of making this show. Getting a second season order before the first season has even premiered is such a vote of confidence in the work we are doing and the property itself, and we couldn’t be happier to be able to continue to live and work in the world Robert Jordan created. This property is one I’ve loved since I was a teenager, and seeing it brought to life with the resources to make it truly worthy of what’s on the page is something I can’t wait for the other fans of the books to see. And Season 2 just keeps expanding the world we built in Season 1.
The Wheel of Time novels, plus the prequel New Spring, have a solid fan base, which means Amazon has a slew of material to adapt and could easily keep the series in production for years to come. Indeed, The Wheel of Time snagging an early season 2 pickup solidifies Amazon’s endeavor to find its own Game of Thrones. Of course, Amazon appears to be sparing no expense to bolster its fantasy genre slate with epic adaptations since the streaming service is paying an estimated $465 million for season 1 for the Lord of the Rings series.
For decades, The Wheel of Time has resonated with readers for its endlessly fascinating world, intricate weaponry, and powerful women as its core. After a long waiting period, the news of season 1 wrapping production could mean an official Wheel of Time trailer is on the horizon. Those familiar with the beloved novels, as well as those eager to dive into a new fantasy series, have a lot to look forward to with Amazon’s adaptation of The Wheel of Time.
