Vanna White will host Wheel of Fortune in Pat Sajak's temporary absence. Hailed as one of the longest-running game shows of all time, Wheel of Fortune debuted in 1975, placing the word puzzle competition alongside equally-historic game shows like Jeopardy and The Price is Right. Created by Merv Griffin, Wheel of Fortune contestants compete by spinning a large carnival wheel and solving word puzzles to win cash and prizes. Originally hosted by Chuck Woolery (who was replaced by Jeopardy’s Alex Trebek for one week) Wheel of Fortune went through numerous hosts and network changes in its early years.
Displaying a knack for selecting television talent, Griffin locked in Pat Sajak and Vanna White to lead Wheel of Fortune after Woolery, and the duo has graced the show's presence since 1983. White won the job after Griffin witnessed her effortlessly activating the puzzle board letters during her audition. One of the most recognized television personalities of all time, 62-year-old White has appeared as herself in numerous TV shows, including The A-Team, Full House, The King of Queens, and the recently canceled Fresh Off the Boat. Now, after a formidable run as co-host, White will take center stage on Wheel of Fortune.
According to Yahoo, Vanna White will host Wheel of Fortune while Pat Sajak recovers from intestinal surgery. Earlier this week, a taping of the show was halted after Sajak required emergency surgery to remedy his blocked intestine. Reportedly, White’s solo performance went smoothly and audiences can tune in to see her talents beginning December 9th. Yesterday, Wheel of Fortune took to Twitter in order to reassure fans Sajak is expecting a full recovery:
Our taping on Thursday was canceled because host Pat Sajak underwent successful emergency surgery to correct a blocked intestine. He is resting comfortably and looking forward to getting back to work. Taping resumed today as scheduled and Vanna White has stepped in as host. pic.twitter.com/09zYOCE4hL— Wheel of Fortune (@WheelofFortune) November 8, 2019
Earlier this year, Sajak took home the Guinness World Record for the longest time hosting the same game show. Over four decades White has reaffirmed her value to Wheel of Fortune, once before demonstrating her hosting abilities during a memorable game show moment when she abruptly took over hosting duties while Sajak rushed backstage to re-watch a contestant’s tape. Overall, Wheel of Fortune remains an American television staple with no sign of slowing down, as both Pat Sajak and Vanna White have renewed their contracts through the year 2022.
Deemed a loyal sidekick to Sajak, White has proven more than once she’s a silent pillar of strength. Despite personal tragedies in her life, including the death of her fiance and a miscarriage, White has remained a graceful, ethical, and insightful television presence. No doubt audiences will want to tune in December to watch America’s favorite girl next door take over the Wheel of Fortune hosting duties once again.
