What We Do In The Shadows is heading to TV, as FX orders a first season of the U.S.-based remake from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. Since it arrived in 2014, What We Do In The Shadows has become a cult classic thanks to its clever send-up of vampire tropes. The mockumentary is also part of what got Waititi, the film's director and co-star, a job helming Thor: Ragnarok for the MCU. Now, he and co-creator Clement (Flight of the Conchords) are spinning out the universe they created with a variety of TV shows and a film sequel titled We're Wolves.

Last we heard, the sequel was still in the works, but two other projects have jumped the queue. The first is Paranormal Event Response Unit, a series that follows the inept cops from What We Do In The Shadows as they investigate more supernatural shenanigans. The show is set to debut in New Zealand this year, and will be the first test as to whether the Shadows universe is really something in need of expanding. Meanwhile, audiences stateside will get their own take on the world.

FX has ordered a 10-episode first season of What We Do In The Shadows, which will retell the story of the film in New York. Created by Waititi and Clement, the show is set to arrive in 2019. The two creators will also produce, alongside writer Paul Simms (Flight of the ConchordsGirls).

Taika Waititi from What We Do in the Shadows to direct Thor: Ragnarok

It's been a quick journey for the reimagining of the show since it was first announced last October. Back in January, FX announced the cast of What We Do In The Shadows along with news of them working to bring it to television. And while things have been known to change during those windows, the network is clearly pleased with what they've seen so far. Though the roles aren't yet known, the series will star Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, and Harvey Guillen.

Other than the similar premise of vampires who have lived together for hundreds of years, it's not known if the characters from the original will be used. It's possible this could be a complete remake of the film, or it could simply be the general idea is being transported to the U.S. If it's the latter, then the show could technically exist in the same universe as the New Zealand stories, but we'll have to wait and see.

Along with the core cast, What We Do In The Shadows added Doug Jones and three other actors to its cast earlier this year. Again, details on their characters aren't available, but it's hard not to imagine Jones as the Nosferatu-like ancient vampire Petyr from the film. But with the show officially happening, it's likely more concrete information will be just around the corner.
