The vampires are returning as FX renews What We Do in the Shadows for seasons 5 and 6. Following the critical success of Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement's vampire mockumentary movie of the same name, there were plenty of discussions about how that universe could live on. The vampire story continued in a new way thanks to the What We Do in the Shadows show that debuted in 2019. Like the original movie, the series focuses on a group of vampires living in New York. What We Do in the Shadows has earned great acclaim throughout the first three seasons on FX.

The network is currently gearing up for the release of What We Do in the Shadows season 4, which returns the lovable quartet of vampires Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Nandor (Kayvan Novak), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) - along with their human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillen). The story picks up after the unexpected turns of the season 3 finale, which included Colin Robinson returning as a baby and the group splitting up. In many ways, What We Do in the Shadows' season 3 ending left audiences wondering what the future held for the show, even though a fourth season was already announced.

It has now been confirmed that the series and these characters are not going anywhere anytime soon. FX officially announced today the renewal of What We Do in the Shadows seasons 5 and 6. The news comes roughly a month before season 4 launches on FX and comes to Hulu the following day. The What We Do in the Shadows renewal comes with word that the series will soon come to Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories that FX and Hulu are not available. Nick Grad, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment, released the following statement about the news:

There’s a lot of life left in our favorite vampires from Staten Island and FX couldn’t be more thrilled to commit to two additional seasons of this phenomenal series. What We Do in the Shadows excels on every level, from the brilliant cast and surprising guest stars to the producers, writers, directors and crew. We can’t wait for everyone to enjoy season four, knowing that the next two are on the way.

Nandor and Nadja shake hands and force smiles in What We Do In The Shadows.

Ahead of What We Do in the Shadows season 4, the show has become a massive hit for FX—the first two seasons combined to earn 10 Emmy Award nominations, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series. What We Do in the Shadows also recently received a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Comedy Series (plus two more nominations). The show's critical acclaim and awards recognition could continue to climb, as What We Do in the Shadows season 3 is currently eligible for Emmy consideration. Pundits expect it to earn another Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, while some cast members are also considered contenders to earn recognition.

It's no surprise, based on the strong praise and fanbase for the show, that What We Do in the Shadows seasons 5 and 6 are now confirmed. It also gives fans a chance to truly enjoy the fourth season without concerns that this could potentially be the end of Lazlo, Nadja, Nandor, Colin Robinson, and Guillermo's stories. These vampires (and one vampire killer) will continue their fun-loving ways for years to come now, ensuring that What We Do in the Shadows will have plenty of opportunities to tell its funny and heartfelt story.
