After teasing his Van Helsing origins in the previous seasons, What We Do in the Shadows will finally introduce Guillermo's family in season 4. FX's horror mockumentary series is based on Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's 2014 Kiwi-cult film of the same name. The series chronicles the misadventures of a new crop of vampires -  Kayvan Novak's Nandor, Matt Berry's Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou's Nadja, and Mark Proksch's life-force draining Colin Robinson, as well as their forsaken familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén). Season 3 premieres on Sept. 2, 2021, and FX has already renewed the show for a fourth season.

The evolution of Guillén's Guillermo has been a key plotline in What We Do in the Shadows. In season 1, the disregarded familiar discovers he was a descendant of the famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. In season 2, Guillermo's vampire-hunting talent is on full display, although he only uses his skills to protect the vampires he serves. By the season finale, which ended on a thrilling cliffhanger, Guillermo's identity is exposed after killing several Vampiric Council members to protect Nandor and the gang. Guillén voiced his interest in exploring Guillermo's lineage further in What We Do in the Shadows. His wishes have since been answered as EP Paul Simms officially confirmed that future seasons would take a close look at Guillermo's origins.

In a conversation with Deadline, Simms confirmed that What We Do in the Shadows season 4 would introduce more members of Guillermo's family. His next of kin would primarily surface in episode 404, and their arrival would make Guillermo particularly restless. After serving the vampires for ten years,  he will begin to realize how he had been neglecting his duties towards his family. Simms also teased that Guillermo's household might share in his Van Helsing DNA, although they may not be as aware of it as the familiar himself. Finally, Simms said that in season 4, Guillermo's ancestry would be routed back to Van Helsing, possibly meaning that the vampire hunter would be Latino in the show's universe. Read what Simms said below:

These are questions that are going to be answered in a big way but not this season. In Season 4 Episode 4, you’re going to meet all of Guillermo’s family in a way that makes him very anxious. We’ll learn that if he has Van Helsing DNA, then so does the rest of his family even though they might not realize it themselves. But we haven’t even shot that yet.

We’ll also learn in Season 4 that Guillermo is feeling the effects of having dedicated 10 years of his life to these vampires and neglecting his family and his responsibilities to them and how he tries to make amends for that.

Claude and Guillermo at vampire hunter meeting in What We Do in the Shadows

Until now, viewers have only met Guillermo's mother, Silvia (Myrna Cabello), who appeared in the season 2 finale. In that episode, disgruntled with the vampires' indifference for him, Guillermo initially leaves them to live with his mom in the Bronx. But ultimately, he returns to rescue Nandor and the others after learning about the Vampiric Council's plans. Not much was revealed about Silvia; instead, she was shown to be this unassuming woman who perturbs Guillermo with her smothering parenting. It's unclear at this point if Silvia would make a reappearance in season 4 along with Guillermo's other relatives.

Many had expected What We Do in the Shadows to tackle Guillermo's backstory in its upcoming season 3. But as it's apparent from the show's official trailer, there's bigger fish to fry, as the vampires will align with Guillermo to assume the leadership of the Vampiric Council. With this new shake-up in the status quo, season 3 will presumably have less time to dedicate to Guillermo's ancestry. Yet, the references to his unfulfillment about being a familiar would be plentiful, as this has been teased in one of the recent clips from the show. Thus, it's safe to assume that season 3 will serve as a set-up for season 4, which, in a decisive and more consequential way, will unravel Guillermo's history before cementing his choice about his identity.
