Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for the FX show What We Do in the Shadows.

The ongoing fourth season of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows brings back all the fan-favorite vampires, including Laszlo Cravensworth. He’s one of the wildest vampires in the hilarious mockumentary, as the 300-something-year-old being is simultaneously the most polite and improper among the housemates.

His relationship with Nadja is a crucial part of his storyline on the show, as they’re an inseparable couple who have been together for the longest time, with Nadja actually turning him into a vampire. The most recent episodes of the series portray their reunion after a year-long separation, following Laszlo’s devious plan to ship Nadja off with Guillermo. His trickery and manipulation are also part of his cunning personality, which fans will hopefully see more of in the current season.

Season 1

Natasia Demetriou and Matt Berry What We Do in the Shadows Season 1 FX

The first season of the series immediately highlights the relationship between Laszlo and Nadja, who have been married for hundreds of years. They’re inseparable and are always finding ways to sneak around the house, at times not even trying to hide their attraction to each other. Laszlo often claims that he’s a sexual being, even proudly revealing that he has starred in several pornographic films. Based on Nadja’s reactions, though, they’re “bloody boring” and he makes them seem more exciting than they really are.

Just like his housemates, Laszlo can be out-of-touch when it comes to interacting with modern-day humans. This becomes obvious in the way he tries to persuade a mayor to side with him by leaving dead raccoons on her porch, believing it would impress her. Laszlo often thinks that he’s better than everyone else, even though his actions make him appear comically pathetic. If there’s one thing that proves that he’s actually capable, though, it’s his confession that he’s responsible for killing Gregor in each of his past lives, all in an attempt to re-capture Nadja’s heart. His love for her is the one constant aspect of his character.

Laszlo as Jackie Daytona in What We Do in the Shadows.

Though he can be intelligent at times, Laszlo’s personality can be extremely unpredictable when it comes to fight or flight situations. In the second season, he makes a terrible mistake with his neighbor Sean, believing that he has figured out that they are vampires and giving him permanent brain damage as a result. More details about his wacky past come to light after the arrival of Jim the Vampire, who apparently has an unsettled score with Laszlo. This prompts Laszlo to run and set up shop in Pennsylvania where he transforms his entire persona to fit in with the community. His soft side is underscored by the act of kindness he does for a volleyball team there.

Laszlo realizes that fighting is better than running eventually and he confronts Jim. This fighting spirit is later applied to another feud with Simon about a cursed hat, which Laszlo also wins. He doesn’t seem to have to exert that much effort to get what he wants, or perhaps it’s just his cool and calm demeanor that makes it seem like everything comes easy for a vampire like him.

Season 3

What We Do In the Shadows Season 4 Laszlo and Colin Robinson

The third season of the series highlights Laszlo’s kindheartedness even more. The first instance of this is when he tries and fails to help Nandor with his love life, as he wears the Cloak of Duplication to pose as him in front of the receptionist he has a crush on. He also allows Colin to help him with his old jalopy car, which they discover in a hidden room in the Vampiric Council. Most importantly, Laszlo supports his neighbor and friend Sean with his gambling addiction, agreeing to become his representative in court.

As further proof of Laszlo’s helpful nature, he agrees to go on a quest with Colin to find out more about energy vampires. This leads them to an island with a dangerous Siren, which Laszlo helps Colin escape from. Another tear-jerking moment in the season happens when Laszlo admits to Nadja that the reason he was expelled from the Supreme Vampiric Council is his undying love for her. Despite this love, he chooses to take care of baby Colin after his adult version’s untimely death, which fans may have seen coming considering the poignant speech Laszlo gave during the energy vampire’s 100th birthday.

Season 4

Laszlo hypnotizing the Guide in What We Do in the Shadows

The most recent episodes show that Laszlo isn’t exactly the best father figure, but he did sacrifice time with Nadja for baby Colin. He’s making sure that the energy vampire is growing up well in his own twisted and funny way, which Guillermo is thankfully correcting now that he’s around. With Nadja back, Laszlo is unsurprisingly devoting attention to her again and even helping her turn the Vampiric Council’s facility into a nightclub.

One of Laszlo’s many talents is displayed when he hypnotizes the Guide to find out why she’s so afraid of change. This is the major roadblock to Nadja’s dream and one that he has seemingly gotten rid of based on the most recent events in the series. It just further shows that he will go to great lengths to make sure she’s happy.
