The ongoing fourth season of What We Do in the Shadows shows even more of the vampires’ wacky antics, which often negatively impact their underappreciated Familiar, Guillermo. The overly patient and occasionally sassy Familiar has become a fan favorite and there have been key moments of character development that show he is changing.

Guillermo has come a long way from being Nandor’s neglected Familiar, with the Van Helsing now a trusty bodyguard who has proven that he’s stronger than they think. He has transformed in numerous ways over the past four seasons, which include changes in his relationships, assertiveness, and his self-confidence.

Season 1

The first season of the mockumentary establishes Guillermo’s core characteristics. As Nandor’s Familiar, he’s subservient and generous to a fault, often sacrificing his own needs and comfort for the sake of his master. The vampires obviously see him as being beneath them and he ends up serving all of them by looking for their victims and maintaining the house. He also has to deal with their antics and unwise decisions (like creepy paper).

Aside from helping them with chores and hunting, he also provides emotional support, particularly for Nandor after he learns his home country no longer exists. Guillermo even saves the vampires from death by sunlight by bringing a huge umbrella with Colin Robinson at one point – it’s not going to be the last time he rescues them. A key moment from the first season that hints at Guillermo’s true power and abilities takes place during the finale when he learns that he has Van Helsing heritage. This will be a defining part of his character and is inextricably linked with his actions and choices in future seasons.

Season 2

Guillermo continues to be annoyed by the vampires’ thoughtless and insensitive actions in the second season, especially after they hire a new Familiar named Topher. Topher’s relationship with Guillermo emphasizes how hard the Van Helsing works and how much he genuinely cares about the gang. This is also the season that Guillermo explores options outside of the group, as he accidentally joins a vampire hunting club masquerading as a mosquito hunting club. Viewers get an idea of his abilities when he massacres an entire house of vampires to save the club members.

Another crucial storyline from the second season takes place when Guillermo abandons Nandor to join Celeste, as she promises to turn him much sooner than Nandor. She turns out to be a fake, but Guillermo still leverages his time with her to bargain for better treatment from Nandor and the housemates (which just entails getting time off). As usual, Guillermo is forced to save the vampires several times, with the first one happening after they’re abducted by witches. Guillermo’s most iconic moment in the series takes place when he slaughters an entire theater full of vampires who want to kill the gang, revealing his Van Helsing heritage to the shocked but still unappreciative housemates.

Season 3

Season three is off to a disappointing start for Guillermo, who spends over a month imprisoned in the gang’s basement because of his actions in the theater. As they argue about his fate, they predictably don’t take into account the fact that he saved all of their lives that night. He is finally exonerated when it’s revealed that his actions elevated the vampires to a high position in the Vampiric Council. Soon, the gang makes the best decision by promoting Guillermo to become their bodyguard instead of just Nandor’s Familiar.

Guillermo’s feelings about Nandor are further explored when he poses as the vampire to flirt with Meg, who is convinced that Guillermo and Nandor should be together. Guillermo soon finds himself helping Nandor with more complicated tasks, even rescuing him from a cult at one point. Things come to a head when Nandor decides to enter a Super Slumber, much to Guillermo’s disapproval. A major fight between the two of them leads to an unexpected promise from the vampire to finally turn Guillermo, but this is foiled by Laszlo’s manipulation that results in Guillermo being in a crate on the way to London with Nadja. It’s a sad end that once again halts Guillermo’s dream of becoming a vampire, which has become a running gag throughout the show.

Season 4

After being stuck in a crate for two weeks, Guillermo makes a strong declaration in the fourth season, promising to prioritize himself over the vampires for once. Things soon revert to the status quo when Nandor asks Guillermo to become his best man for his wedding, though, which just leads to another cycle of the Familiar planning and organizing everything as the vampires neglect to appreciate him. His participation in the underground Familiar fights underscores some of the sour feelings he has about his master, which he thankfully shakes off in time for the wedding.

Guillermo also helps Laszlo this season, as the father figure for baby Colin is obviously not doing a very good job. He tries to provide some normalcy by suggesting they enroll baby Colin in a proper school, which doesn’t end well for anyone. The most important moment in the season so far happens when Guillermo invites his family to the house and pretends it’s his, not knowing that Nadja is around. He’s forced to pretend she’s his girlfriend, which leads to the Van Helsings hunting her down before being halted by Guillermo’s speech where he comes out as gay. It’s a heartwarming moment that leads to an uncharacteristically kind act from Nadja, who helps him with his family by hypnotizing them into forgetting that Guillermo is a Familiar serving several vampires.
