The cast of the What We Do In The Shadows TV show continues to expand, adding Doug Jones and three other actors. Before Taika Waititi became a Hollywood hitmaker thanks to Thor: Ragnarok, the director, actor, and writer was perhaps best known for What We Do In The Shadows. A mockumentary focusing on a group of vampires sharing a flat in New Zealand, the film has proven a launching ground of ideas for Waititi. Chief among them, an American TV show based on What We Do In The Shadows.
The What We Do In The Shadows TV show has been picked up by FX and is now moving swiftly towards the start of production. The network is already home to a number of critically acclaimed genre TV shows (ranging from Legion to The Americans), so Waititi's rework of his cult film should fit nicely there. Now, four more actors have joined the show's ensemble cast, which already includes Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, and Harvey Guillen.
Variety is reporting that Doug Jones, Beanie Feldstein, Jake McDorman, and Mark Proksch have now joined the aforementioned four names as cast members on the What We Do In The Shadows TV show. It's not yet clear who any of these actors will be playing on the series, seeing as character details remain under lock and key for now. That being said, anyone who's seen the original movie will probably have a hard time not imagining Jones playing the Nosferatu-like Petyr on the show (or a new vampire character along those same lines).
Jones is best known for his various motion capture and prosthetic roles, having played "The Asset" in The Shape of Water and Abe Sapien in Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy movies. (He also currently plays Saru on Star Trek: Discovery.) Feldstein and McDorman both played roles in Greta Gerwig's Best Picture Oscar-nominated 2017 film Lady Bird, while Proksch has previously appeared on TV shows like Better Call Saul and The Office.
The show's cast is so far pulling in plenty of comedic vets, as well as those associated with both prestige and genre movies and/or TV shows. With Waititi lending a helping hand on the series, the TV version of What We Do In The Shadows should win over the film's fan base.
The U.S. TV show isn't the only thing that Waititi is spinning out from his original movie. A separate What We Do In The Shadows TV spinoff premieres in New Zealand later this year, and will revolve around the hapless pair of police officers from the original film. In addition to all that, a movie sequel titled We're Wolves remains in development, though it doesn't appear to be making much forward progress at the moment.
The What We Do In The Shadows TV show is expected to air later this year on FX.
