Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Marvel’s What If…? episode 8.

Marvel’s What If…? has made a strong case for the Mind Stone being the MCU’s most powerful Infinity Stone, but is it actually the strongest? First introduced as the power behind Loki’s scepter, the Mind Stone eventually gave birth to both Ultron and Vision, as well as being involved in awakening Scarlet Witch’s powers. The Mind Stone has featured prominently throughout What If…? season 1, potentially cementing it as the dominant Infinity stone.

Each of the Infinity Stones is incredibly powerful and in vastly different ways. Some, like the Power Stone, are explicit weapons. Others, like the Time Stone, are more abstract in their power but no less dangerous when in the wrong hands. At first glance, the Mind Stone doesn’t seem like the most powerful of the bunch because it falls into the more abstract category. But the peaks of its powers are immense, and there may be even greater things the Mind Stone can do that haven’t been explored yet on screen.

The Mind Stone’s strongest claim to the title of most powerful Infinity Stone is probable that it can literally create sentient life – something none of the other stones are capable of doing. With the Mind Stone driving him, Vision has proved to be one of the strongest characters in the entire MCU in terms of sheer combat power. What If…? has made some other compelling arguments on the Mind Stone’s behalf, including the fact that it alone can undo the Marvel zombie apocalypse and that Ultron is able to quickly defeat Thanos with only the Mind Stone, even when the Mad Titan holds all five other Infinity Stones.

The brutal way in which Ultron uses the Mind Stone shows that it’s not any weaker as a pure weapon than the other Infinity Stones, and its potential may be the greatest of all. Only the Mind Stone has been able to activate powers like Scarlet Witch’s, and only the Mind Stone has been able to create life. But that still doesn’t explain how Ultron can vanquish Thanos so easily when he only has the Mind Stone, and Thanos has all the others.

Perhaps the reason Ultron and Vision are able to maximize the Mind Stone’s power so thoroughly is that it’s an inherent part of them. Because they have been given life by the Mind Stone, they may be able to tap into its powers in ways no one else – not even Thanos – can do with any of the Infinity Stones. That would make the ceiling for the Mind Stone’s potential power even higher, at least when being used by someone it has melded with. It’s tough to say which Infinity Stone is truly the most powerful, but the MCU has made a pretty solid case for it being the Mind Stone.
