Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel's What If...?, episode 5, "What If...Zombies?!"

With the Marvel Zombies episode of Marvel's What If...? being so entertaining and dynamic, it's clear that one episode isn't enough. By the episode's end, the world is far from cured of the zombie infection that has taken over the world, and there are very few surviving Avengers left to keep fighting to restore the world. Because episode 5 of What If...? left unanswered questions and cliffhangers for the fate of this alternate timeline in the MCU, a sequel feels more than warranted beyond any other episode that's come beforehand.

In episode 5 of Marvel's What If...?, Bruce Banner returns to Earth after Asgard was attacked by Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. However, in this new timeline he discovers that the world has been overrun by a zombie infection originating from the Quantum Realm. Several of Earth's Mightiest Heroes have already been infected with their superpowered walking corpses all but sealing the planet's fate. However, Banner did join the heroes who were still living such as Spider-Man, the Wasp, Winter Soldier, and select others who had banded together to form a resistance. However, many were lost to the zombie hordes, especially after the undead Wanda Maximoff was freed from the confinement Vision had been keeping her in. By the end of the episode only Spider-Man, a one-legged Black Panther, and Scott Lang's head in a jar were the only heroes who made it to Wakanda to potentially create a cure.

That being said, there are so many questions that the episode failed to answer. For example, how many non-heroes are still alive? Who won the battle between Hulk and zombie Wanda when Banner sacrificed himself to buy the other Avengers time? Was a cure created using Vision's Mind Stone? What about zombie Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet teased in the episode's final shot? Clearly, there's more than a handful of avenues and threads that could be explored, proving the What If...?'s Marvel Zombies episode deserves some sort of a sequel down the line.

Somehow, this featured timeline in Marvel's multiverse must be revisited. While it would be nice to see some of the hanging threads resolved in What If..?'s finale, it would also be fun to have a full-length second chapter in What If...?'s eventual second season on Disney+. Furthermore, an animated Marvel Zombies series all its own would be incredible, as it could flesh out more of the infected Marvel universe in ways a single thirty-minute episode just can't. Furthermore, with rumors that Captain Carter could be featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, perhaps the Sorcerer Supreme could find his way into the undead Marvel Universe, providing fans with a live-action look at the zombified Avengers?

In any case, Marvel Studios has an opportunity they could and should take to expand upon this single episode from What If...?. The concept of undead Avengers has long been a popular and beloved concept in the comics, and it's no secret that many would absolutely love to see some sort of Marvel Zombies sequel in the MCU's near future.
