A fan poster inspired by What If…? sees its Guardians of the Multiverse assemble in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios’ first animated series on Disney+ was originally thought to be a mere anthology series exploring alternate universes/timelines where key MCU events had played out differently. The final episodes of season 1 see its previously impartial narrator, Uatu the Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright), forced to break his oath of non-interference. In episode 9, “What If...The Watcher Broke His Oath?,” he assembles the Guardians of the Multiverse.

Episode 8, “What If...Ultron Won?,” introduces audiences to a world where its titular villain capitalized during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Equipped with a vibranium body and the Mind Stone, Ultron (Ross Marquand) makes quick work of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Thanos before taking the remaining Infinity Stones. After purging the galaxy, Ultron becomes aware of the Multiverse and, in turn, the Watcher—which results in a rampage that threatens all life. Therefore, the Watcher goes to Doctor Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help and, in episode 9, rounds up Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), T'Challa's Star-Lord (Chadwick Boseman), Party Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Lake Bell), Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), and Gamora (Cynthia McWilliams) to combat Ultron.

Thanks to the Watcher’s foresight, the Guardians of the Multiverse defeat Ultron and Doctor Strange Supreme was able to contain Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) and Killmonger at the end of episode 9. Before the finale, it seemed plausible for Ultron to attack every universe/timeline including the Scared one seen in live-action. Theories persist saying that characters like What If…?’s Doctor Strange and Captain Carter may someday appear in live-action. It may even be feasible for characters like Party Thor and Ultron to appear, with Paul Bettany portraying the latter and Marquand or James Spader providing the voice. As for What If…?’s Gamora, not much is known about her character other than she’s a “survivor of Sakaar and killer of Thanos” because her episode was delayed to season 2.

For a multitude of reasons, it’s extremely unlikely audiences ever see this iteration of What If…?’s Guardians of the Multiverse in the live-action MCU. That being said, with the Multiverse Theory in play, Marvel Studios can decide to have any future assortment of characters appear anywhere—from Deadpool, the X-Men, and Venom to Captain Carter and Doctor Strange Supreme. Upcoming Phase 4 films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, or Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummaina open the door for a variety of characters to make their live-action MCU debut. If there’s any What If…? character capable of making that transition, it’s the Watcher himself.
