Warning! SPOILERS Marvel's What If...? episode 2, "What If...T'Challa Became A Star-Lord?"

Marvel's What If...? episode 2 turns Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa into Star-Lord and shows what happened to Peter Quill, but it leaves the door open on where the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy members are in this story. Unfortunately, they were nowhere to be seen despite the episode featuring a fun adventure with the characters it did have such as Drax, Nebula, as well as Yondu and the Ravagers. Will we see these missing Guardians in future episodes of the new Disney+ series? What would they be doing instead of joining the MCU's premier space team?

In Marvel's What If...? episode 2, Yondu tasks Kraglin and Taserface to pick up Peter Quill from Earth instead of going himself. This leads to the Ravagers accidentally picking up T'Challa instead as they were confused by the cosmic energy Wakanda gave off due to their Great Mound of vibranium. After Yondu raised T'Challa just as he would have Peter, T'Challa grew up to become an actual legendary Star-Lord, having gained fame and admiration after he convinced Yondu to turn the Ravagers towards less self-serving pursuits, which saw them stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Throughout his journey, T'Challa meets Drax (not voiced by Dave Bautista) who's working as a bartender to support his still-living wife and daughter. Apparently, T'Challa and the Ravagers prevented the Kree invasion that would have killed them. Additionally, Nebula is working alongside the Ravagers as a fixer who finds the crew new jobs.

However, despite both Nebula and her adoptive father Thanos working with the Ravagers to be a force for good in the galaxy, Zoe Saldana's Gamora is nowhere to be found, which does seem odd. However, this might be due to an upcoming episode that will be focused on Gamora herself (teased by What If...?'s poster). With Gamora wearing similar armor and wielding the same blade used by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, it looks as though the episode might feature an alternate relationship with Thanos where she never resisted his wish for her to succeed him as a galactic conqueror. Additionally, the end of the episode sees Ego coming to Earth himself to take his son Peter (who's working at a Dairy Queen), and it's safe to assume that Mantis is still serving the dark Celestial. Likewise, Rocket and Groot are likely still working as bounty hunters in the galaxy (if not having been arrested by the Nova Corps).

Gamora-What-If-Poster

While it's unclear if Gamora's episode will be set in the same alternate timeline as T'Challa's Star-Lord, it does seems like the most likely episode to feature the rest of the missing Guardians. Furthermore, now that Ego has Peter Quill, it seems as though he could be set up as an eventual threat that could bring this new Star-Lord back for future appearances along with the Ravagers, and any other characters who were meant to become Guardians in the primary MCU timeline. What If...?'s trailer does tease a Guardians of the Multiverse being formed later on in the series, so that's probably the most likely time where Gamora and T'Challa could meet at the very least.

While it's confirmed that Gamora will be coming in a future episode, it would certainly be a lot of fun to see Mantis, Rocket, and Groot getting animated appearances, if only to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy set. Perhaps Rocket and Groot could be Gamora's new enforcers akin to Thanos' Black Order? In any case, Marvel's What If...? has proven to be a lot of fun with its twists and intriguing hypotheticals regardless of any characters who might be missing thus far.
