What If…? Every MCU Concept Art At The End Of Episode 1

Warning! SPOILERS for Marvel's What If...? episode 1, "What If...Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?"

Marvel's What If...? episode 1 ends with several pieces of concept art, similar to the credits sequences seen in The Mandalorian. Being the first animated MCU production, What If...? naturally carries a large focus on its dynamic art and animation style. As a result, it's fun to appreciate the concept art of the dynamic destinations and locales seen in the first episode showcased in the credits.

In "What If...Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?", Agent Peggy Carter (Haley Atwell) finds herself becoming the subject of the SSR's Super Solider Serum rather than its original volunteer Steve Rogers (Josh Keaton) as seen in the primary MCU timeline. Becoming Captain Carter, Peggy joins the frontlines of the war effort against Red Skull and HYDRA, though she's also joined by Rogers in his HYDRA Stomper suit of armor built for him by Howard Stark. While they do visit several familiar locations seen in Captain America: The First Avenger, there's also a handful of new destinations as well (the result of the new timeline being created).

Similar to the credits sequences of The Mandalorian, concept art can be seen at the end of What If...?'s first episode, though the Marvel art is limited to just landscapes and locations rather than artwork of any of the characters present in the premiere. Regardless, here's every piece of concept art featured in the credits of "What If...Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" and what their significance is.

Red Skull's Hydra Fortress

Serving as the primary new location for Captain Carter's First Avenger narrative, Red Skull retreated to this fortress after securing the Tesseract and capturing Steve Rogers. Presumably somewhere in Europe, Captain Carter and the Howling Commandos staged an attack on the facility to try and prevent Red Skull from using the Tesseract and its immense power, as well as rescuing Rogers once they discovered he was still alive.

SSR Project Rebirth Facility

Featured in Captain America: The First Avenger, the SSR's Project Rebirth facility in Brooklyn was where Steve Rogers (and now Peggy Carter) received the Super Soldier Serum from Doctor Erskine. Just like in the MCU film, Erskine was murdered by an undercover HYDRA agent, leaving Steve and Peggy as the only Super Soldiers to be created in their respective timelines until the serum was recreated in the modern era.

HYDRA Tesseract Testing Room

Another new location featured within the Red Skull's fortress is the room where HYDRA harnessed the power of the Tesseract in order to call forth their Champion of Hydra. Appearing as a massive tentacled creature from the stars, this new threat Peggy, Steve, and the Howling Commandoes faced could potentially be the Doctor Strange and multiversal monster known as Shuma-Gorath.

Brandenburg Gate In Berlin

Peggy's first true mission as a Super Soldier saw her retrieving the Tesseract from HYDRA and Doctor Zola who were in Germany near the Brandenburg Gate, a famous piece of architecture in Berlin. During World War II, the Brandenburg Gate had become a symbol of the Nazi Party, and they even created a decoy of the structure to confuse Allied bombers seeing as how the iconic landmark is featured near the center of Berlin itself. In the episode, it serves as the backdrop while Peggy marvels at her new strength and shield as she takes down the entire contingent of HYDRA soldiers.

SSR Base Of Operations

The SSR's base of operations and briefing room is featured as well, which can also be seen in the original Captain America film. This was where Captain America received his shield, provided intel to the SSR on HYDRA's movements, and where the SSR planned their next moves in their campaign against HYDRA. Likewise, this was where Captain Carter brought the Tesseract back and where she planned the SSR's attack on Red Skull's fortress.

Church In Tønsberg

The city of Tønsberg, Norway, is also featured in the concept art, and it's become an iconic location in the MCU timeline. Not only was it where Odin and the armies of Asgard fought Laufey and his frost giants in the earliest days of civilization, but the Tesseract had been hidden away in a church in Tønsberg until it was recovered by the Red Skull in both the primary and What If...? timelines. Not only that, but Tønsberg has also become New Asgard in the modern MCU era, serving as a refuge for the Asgardians who survived the destruction of Asgard during Thor: Ragnarok and Thanos' subsequent attack during the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War.
