New details for Doctor Strange's episode of What If...? reportedly reveal an evil Sorcerer Supreme. While Loki is currently in the midst of its run on Disney+, it is difficult not to look ahead to Marvel's lineup of upcoming shows. After Tom Hiddleston’s solo series wraps, Jeremy Renner's first solo outing will be premiering later this year. But before Hawkeye airs, the MCU will see its first foray into animation with What If…?.

The anthology series will answer its titular question by revisiting pivotal moments from the MCU’s storyline up until this point and exploring what would have happened if things had gone a little differently. Based on the comics storyline of the same name, the animated series is narrated by a new character in Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) and will feature a host of MCU characters voiced by their original actors. So far, a few confirmed storylines are Peggy Carter becoming Captain America instead of Steve Rogers and T'Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill.

Now, The Illuminerdi has uncovered some exciting information about Dr. Stephen Strange’s alternate fate in What If...? In his 2016 origin story, Strange turns to magic to regain the use of his hands after a debilitating injury effectively ends his career as a neurosurgeon. According to new reports, the show’s version of the character will turn to magic following the “death of his true love,” which leads him “down a darker path with dark and dangerous magic in an attempt to change his past.”

This version of the character certainly sounds like a departure from the one first introduced in 2016’s Doctor Strange and then seen in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame. This Doctor Strange storyline is perhaps the most heavily anticipated part of What If...? because the show is expected to tie in directly with the Spider-Man movies, the next of which Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will be appearing in before his 2022 solo film.

How What If…? Will directly connect to Spider-Man and what dark path Strange goes down remains to be seen. As it is described above, Strange's storyline sounds slightly similar to that of Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecillius, who was also motivated by grief. Perhaps the MCU series could see Strange take on his role instead. The show’s trailer shows this darker version of Strange taking on the one from the live-action films that fans have come to know and love. All signs point to What If…? being another deep plunge into Marvel’s multiverse.
