Warning: SPOILERS for Marvel's What If...?

Captain Marvel made another prominent appearance in Marvel's What If...? episode 7 but Brie Larson doesn't voice Carol Danvers. Having debuted in the animated show's third episode in the wake of the Avengers murders, Marvel appears during Party Thor's invasion of Earth after Maria Hill finally did what Nick Fury refused to and called his alien associate in to save the planet. That made for an incredible face-off between the Asgardian and the Tesseract-powered human.

After What If...? episode 3 ended with the revelation that there were no heroes to stop Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from leading an Asgardian conquest, episode 7 saw the show's second Asgardian invasion in completely different circumstances. It perhaps wasn't one of the top considerations for MCU fans, given the lack of real in-universe connotations of Thor being a "party bro", but the episode at least set up a real showdown between two superhero powerhouses in a way the MCU has only flirted with a couple of times previously. Even Infinity War and Endgame avoided big one-versus-one fights, despite showing Captain Marvel and Thanos briefly going toe-to-toe.

Substituting for Brie Larson, Alexandra Daniels plays Captain Marvel in What If...? episodes 3 and 7. Daniels is best known for playing Abigail Cooke in the WGN America TV series Salem, which was about the 17th century Salem Witch Trials. Daniels also played Layla in the 2016 film Mothers and Daughters. Next, Alexandra will be seen in the upcoming psychological thriller The Redeemers. However, Daniels isn't known for voice-over roles, and playing Carol Danvers in What If...? is her first time working with Marvel Studios.

Captain Marvel powering up in What If

Captain Marvel only appears in the final seconds of What If...? episode 3 and Daniels only speaks one sentence as Carol Danvers: "So, where's the fight?" but her role in episode 7 is far more substantial. Marvel Studios reportedly asked all of the MCU's principal actors to return for What If...? and Larson is one of a number of big names who declined, including Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. Instead, Larson is focused on playing Carol Danvers in live-action once more in The Marvels, which is currently in production.

After episode 7 is possible to get more of a handle on Alexandra Daniels' performance as Carol Danvers: she's not a mimic for Brie Larson's speaking voice, compared to how Josh Keaton captured Chris Evans's Brooklyn accent as Steve Rogers almost exactly and how Fred Tatasciore managed to replicate Dave Bautista's cadence as Drax the Destroyer in previous episodes of What If...?  There are certainly similarities, but the impetus doesn't appear to be on nailing the voice as closely as soundalike Mick Wingert does for Tony Stark in his episodes - this is very much more like Hudson Thames' performance as Spider-Man in What If...?'s Marvel Zombies episode, where the spirit of the voice is similar, but differences endure.
