Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Terminal List season 1

The Terminal List season 1 leaves many unanswered questions for James Reece, who continues his journey in the pages of Jack Carr's novels. Chris Pratt plays James Reece in the Amazon Prime Video series that also stars Taylor Kitsch, Constance Wu, Jai Courtney, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and JD Pardo. The Terminal List adapts author Jack Carr's first novel in the James Reece saga, The Terminal List, which currently has four sequel books featuring the protagonist.

Carr originally created his protagonist in the likeness of Pratt, not knowing that the actor would eventually play James Reece in The Terminal List series. Director Antoine Fuqua and showrunner Dan DiGilio brought the 8-episode first season to life for Prime Video, which covers the events of the book, leaving Reece in a questionable state by the end. After his SEAL team and his family are killed and he is diagnosed with a brain tumor, Reece sets out on a mission of revenge to kill everyone responsible. This leaves him branded a domestic terrorist, fleeing the country with an assumed terminal illness.

The Terminal List season 1 ending finds Reece plotting a course to Mozambique, but no reason for that choice is given and there's no resolution mentioned as to the status of his brain tumor. In Carr's second novel, True Believer, it's revealed that Reece's friend and former SEAL teammate has family in Mozambique that takes him in when he arrives, helping to keep him hidden from the U.S. government. Reece is eventually found, however, and recruited by the CIA to help take out an international terrorist, given a deal that pardons his crimes in The Terminal List. It's also revealed that his brain tumor is operable, which is something he eventually opts to have taken care of before continuing his journey as a special agent of sorts, constantly battling with his sense of duty and loyalty to his country and his friends.

A character briefly mentioned in The Terminal List is Raife Hastings, who supplies Reece with a boat, weapons, and supplies for his infiltration into Secretary Hartley's island in The Terminal List season 1 finale. Raife leaves a note that reads, "This makes us even. If you make it out, you know where to go." After accomplishing his mission, Reece is seen on the sailboat plotting a course to Mozambique, which book fans will know is where Raife Hastings' family is located. In True Believer, Reece sails to Mozambique and hides out with the Hastings family, who run a game preserve there, keeping him well hidden and off the grid, until he runs into some poachers and makes waves that reverberate back to the U.S., sparking an outreach by the CIA.

At the end of The Terminal List season 1, Reece sails off without a mention of what will happen with his tumor caused by RD4895, but in The Terminal List book, the final chapter gives a very clear picture as to the status of his tumor. A voice message on his confiscated cell phone reveals a call from his doctor that states the tumor is operable after looking at the biopsy, with a 75% or higher survival rate. By the end of True Believer, Reece opts for the surgery and recovers into the third book, Savage Son, where he returns to full health and picks back up on his globe-trotting mission of battling the evils of the world.

After The Terminal List, Reece seeks redemption in True Believer—likely the source material for The Terminal List season 2—which has him coming to grips with the losses he faced, the actions he took, and the fate of his future. He is recruited by the CIA to take out a global terrorist, given a presidential pardon, and put back on the path he knows all too well: killing bad guys. After accomplishing his mission in True Believer, Reece gets the brain tumor operation and begins his recovery into Savage Son, which has him in Montana and with the Russian mafia on his trail. In the fourth book, The Devil's Hand, Reece is thrust into a massive terrorist attack on U.S. soil, which leads to him being authorized to hunt down the conspirators, including those that were involved in 9/11, but never brought to justice. In The Blood has Reece going toe-to-toe with a fellow sniper named Nizar Kattan, who killed one of his former teammates and is hired by the mysterious Talos group to kill him.
