A Frasier reboot is officially in the works — but where are the original cast members now? In February 2022, almost two decades after the sitcom went off the air, Paramount+ announced that a revival series had finally been greenlit. The original Frasier ran for an impressive 11 seasons, spanning from 1993 to 2004. Talk of a reboot series started to surface back in 2018, and now, the project has finally gotten off the ground. Spearheaded by writers Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, one of modern television's greatest comedies is set to make its triumphant return in 2023, despite several release delays.

Paramount+'s reboot has been forced to switch angles with its plot due to the lack of original Frasier cast members signed onto the project. Instead of seeing several familiar faces, the series will follow Dr. Crane as he takes on a new chapter in his life in a brand-new city. There are several reasons that so many original cast members have decided to pass on the reboot series; some are currently busy with other projects while others are simply not interested. One iconic actor is unable to reprise his role for the reboot as he, unfortunately, passed away in 2018. According to Grammer, their absences will be addressed in the sequel series.

Kelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammer is the only original Frasier star confirmed to return for the reboot as the beloved Dr. Frasier Crane. Grammer has been attached to the revival project since it was announced. In addition to starring in the titular role, Grammer will serve as an executive producer in the Paramount+ Frasier reboot. After a long time away from the role, Grammer is eager to return once again. "I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr. Frasier Crane," Grammer assured fans in a statement announcing the reboot.

In the nearly twenty years since Frasier went off the air, Grammer's career has sampled a bit of everything, displaying his impeccable range. Grammer has appeared in several blockbuster films, including X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Transformers: The Age of Extinction. In the world of sitcoms, he can be spotted in Modern Family, 30 Rock, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He has lent his legendary voice to several animated characters throughout the years, including the Prospector in Toy Story 2 and Sideshow Bob in The Simpsons. Grammer has also appeared on Broadway in La Cage aux Folles and Man of La Mancha.

David Hyde Pierce

David Hyde Pierce as Paul Child in Julia

Currently, David Hyde Pierce has no intention of reprising his role as Niles Crane, Dr. Crane's younger brother. In a November 2022 interview with People, Grammer revealed that Hyde Pierce would not be taking part in the revival, stating that "David basically decided he wasn't really interested in repeating the performance of Niles." In his own June 2022 interview with Vulture, Hyde Pierce confirmed he was done with the role; "I don’t have a strong feeling that there’s anything more that I can think of that I need to say about the character." Though he still holds love for Niles, Hyde Pierce is finished with that chapter of his career.

Hyde Pierce has enjoyed a very busy career since his Frasier days. In the years since the sitcom ended, Hyde Pierce took to the theatre, appearing in shows such as Curtains, Spamalot, and the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, alongside Bette Midler. Frasier's David Hyde Pierce has been nominated for and awarded several Tony Awards for his work. The actor has also appeared on the screen several times over the years, taking on notable roles like Frank Prady of The Good Wife and, most recently, Paul Cushing Child in the HBO Max series Julia.

John Mahoney

John Mahoney in Frasier

John Mahoney played Martin "Marty" Crane, Niles and Frasier's father, for all 11 seasons of Frasier. Unfortunately, the beloved actor passed away in 2018 at the age of 77 due to complications associated with throat cancer. Mahoney's passing came just as talks of a Frasier revival started to surface. Outside of Frasier, Mahoney appeared in TV series such as Burn Notice and Hot in Cleveland. He is also known for his performances in films like Say Anything... and Moonstruck. Mahoney's last role before his passing was Andrew Del Mar in the television series Foyle's War in 2015.

Mahoney isn't the only death the Frasier spinoff will have to address. Eddie was Marty's beloved little dog for 11 seasons, with the two partners in crime winning the hearts of audiences. Unfortunately, the dog that played Eddie — whose real name was Moose — passed away at the ripe old age of 16 back in 2006. While the Jack Russell likely wouldn't have been alive in the Frasier spinoff anyway, Eddie's absence will feel just as sharp as Marty's.

Jane Leeves

Jane Leeves in The Resident

Jane Leeves, the actress behind Daphne Moon (eventually Daphne Crane), announced back in a February 2021 Entertainment Weekly interview that she would not leave her current project when asked if any eventual Frasier spinoffs were to come to fruition; "I have no idea, but I won't be leaving The Resident to do that if it happens." Besides starring as orthopedic surgeon Kit Voss in The Resident since 2018, Leeves also appeared on Hot in Cleveland as Joy Scroggs from 2010 to 2015, as well as in series like The Great Indoors and Crowded.

Peri Gilpin

Peri Gilpin's Roz Doyle, who served as Frasier's radio show producer, has not signed on to make a return in the Frasier revival. Since Frasier went off the air, Gilpin has gone on to star in series like Medium, Desperate Housewives, and Law and Order: Criminal Intent. Gilpin most recently appeared in the Netflix docuseries The Anthrax Attacks. Outside of acting, Gilpin has been heavily involved in politics and advocating for cancer research. As the last legacy character to be missing from the Frasier reboot, Gilpin has not made a comment regarding the reason for her absence.
