HBO has released the Westworld season 3 trailer. With Game of Thrones having ended and Watchmen unlikely to have a season 2, HBO is looking to the return of Westworld to fill its genre television-sized hole. The new season is expected this year, but in true Westworld fashion, the teasers HBO has been releasing reveal next to nothing about what's happening in season 3.

Westworld is a sci-fi series centered on a theme park staffed by incredibly lifelike robots and overseen by the shady Delos Inc. It largely focuses on the growing conflict between the robots, or hosts as they're called, and the people who made them. Though not initially created with sentience, some of the hosts evolve and begin entertaining ideas like freedom and revolution. In Westworld's season 1 finale, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) bloodily kicks off the robot revolt by killing Westworld's founder, Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) in front of gathered attendees. Westworld season 2 would further explore the hosts developing consciousness, but for many fans, the series became too muddled and less interesting. Still, there remains intrigue around Westworld season 3 since the show left off with Dolores finally leaving the park and entering the real world.

Today, HBO released the Westworld season 3 trailer, revealing a new look at the exciting sci-fi series' third installment. Check it out, below:

Concrete details about what's happening in Westworld season 3 remain under wraps, but besides Dolores' adventures in the real world - adventures that will bring her into contact with Aaron Paul's new character, a construction worker named Caleb - it appears that Thandie Newton's host, Maeve, in now involved with a new theme park, Warworld. It's still unclear exactly how Maeve is back seeing as she sacrificed herself in season 2, but it appears she'll be tasked with destroying Dolores, who seems ready to wage war on Delos and humankind with the help of Caleb. Also returning for Westworld season 3 is Jeffrey Wright as the host, Bernard, having been recreated by Dolores to aide her and the other hosts she escaped with.

Given that one of the biggest complaints about Westworld season 2 was that is was too confusing, showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have promised season 3 will be easier to follow. Westworld season 3 will also be shorter than previous seasons, totaling at just eight episodes rather than 10. Hopefully the shorter season leads to more streamlined storytelling, allowing audiences to quickly jump back in with the many plots of the show's humans and hosts.
