Season 3 of Westworld may only have less material than normal to film when production begins next month. HBO has successfully rebooted the Michael Crichton movie on the small screen with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and are quickly approaching movement on the next season. The first season of Westworld was applauded by audiences and critics, but season 2 saw a dip in quality and interest.
The season two finale completely reshaped the series with more of the new reveals and major deaths that Westworld has quickly developed a habit of. This has left many fans of the show - and even some stars - wondering what will come next. There's been very few official updates on the third season, only that Aaron Paul has joined the cast in a major role. Nolan and Joy have promised that the upcoming season will be a "radical shift" for the story, but what exactly they mean by that remains unclear. However, we may now how the next story will change with its formatting, and when filming will begin.
Revenge of the Fans reports that production on Westworld season 3 is going to begin on March 25. This comes on the heels of previous reports noting a March 2019 start for filming, but no exact date was given before. When the cast and crew report to set next month, they may also have a slightly smaller workload than they're used to. According to the site, the third season will consist of only eight episodes, instead of the ten episode count that the first two seasons had. None of this has been confirmed by HBO at this time, so take it with a grain of salt until further notice.
Now that some possible details on the length of Westworld season 3 are out, many will soon begin to wonder when exactly the new episodes could start airing on HBO. The second season started filming in June 2017 and it took them until late January 2018 to film the ten episodes. HBO then launched the sophomore season in late April 2018. Thanks to the shorter episode count for season three, it's possible, if not likely, that they could have the latest batch of episodes ready much quicker than the ten month turnaround on season 2.
There's an outside chance that Westworld season 3 could be ready to go by the end of this year, but there has so far been no indication that will happen. Since HBO launched season 2 in April last year to fill the Game of Thrones-sized void in their schedule, they could once again hold this new season until the same slot next year. That said, Lisa Joy is set to start work on her directorial debut in October, which is reportedly when she'll finish her work on the third season, so Westworld should be ready much earlier. Whenever the series does return, fans will just be hoping that Westworld season 3 is a return to greatness.
