Pedro Pascal reveals his emotional reaction to Steven Spielberg's West Side Story in a sweet message for Rachel Zegler. Few actors seem to be as busy as Pascal is these days, though fans certainly aren't complaining. Fresh off his new Netflix release The Bubble, the actor is currently making the rounds promoting another movie, the meta Nic Cage film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Outside of film, Pascal is at the center of two highly anticipated releases: HBO's The Last of Us and Disney+'s The Mandalorian, which is expected to return for season 3 later this year.

All of this is to say, Pascal has a very packed schedule right now. And yet, he's still found time to catch some of the movies he isn't in. Released in theaters last December, Spielberg's West Side Story reboot swiftly charmed critics and audiences, though its box office grosses left much to be desired. Nevertheless, the latest cinematic adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet-esque musical was at the center of the recent awards season and came away with 7 Oscar nominations. In the end, it only won in the best supporting actress category for breakout star Ariana DeBose.

West Side Story has a lot of fans, and Pascal is evidently one of them. This past weekend was his 47th birthday, and West Side Story's Zelger, who played lovestruck Maria, took to social media to send Pascal her well wishes. In response, Pascal told her that he has "4 witnesses that saw me burst into tears when your Maria appeared on screen." Zegler's reply is extremely relatable: "aaaaaaand *screech*."

Zegler has gotten to see several A-list celebrities bestow their praises on West Side Story; not so long ago, she was eagerly reacting to Cher celebrating the musical. Pascal's emotional reaction to the film - and to Zegler specifically - is both sweet and perhaps a testament to how well-cast Zegler was. The original West Side Story movie famously cast white actors to portray certain Latino characters, and Spielberg's remake managed to buck that practice. It could be that Pascal was overwhelmed with emotion at the sight of proper representation. He also just might've been very, very impressed with Zegler's singing voice. Or maybe he just loves watching movies.

Either way, Pascal's reaction is just the latest in an ever-growing line of praise the 2021 West Side Story has received. With the awards season now finished, its potential for accolades may be at an end. Luckily, though, it has also arrived on streaming, thus allowing anyone who skipped seeing it in theaters to enjoy the skillfully made movie from the comfort of their own home. West Side Story is an underseen gem, and as Pascal can attest, it makes for an excellent night of entertainment.
