A Halloween special isn’t enough for Werewolf by Night, who deserves his own live-action TV series on Disney+. Kevin Smith has recently been quoted as saying Marvel has plans for Werewolf by Night and now a report from The Wrap, Marvel suggests there are plans to finally brings its main werewolf character from the comics into the MCU in the form of a Halloween special.

If it happens, it’ll be the second of its kind. One seasonal release is already planned for Phase 4. Directed and written by James Gunn, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be arriving on Disney+ in 2022. Given the success enjoyed by the Marvel shows it already has in its library, it’s not surprising that Marvel would be interested in creating even more MCU content for the streaming service, and not limiting their Disney+ plans to just TV shows. For the most part, it’s been focused on using existing characters from the movies for its Disney+ slate, but shows like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight prove that it also has confidence in adding its own MCU characters. For this reason, Marvel may not be opposed to letting Werewolf by Night lead his own project.

A Werewolf by Night story – of any length – certainly sounds like a fun idea, but the character deserves more. Specifically, the character could headline his own TV show, possibly in Marvel’s 2023 lineup (if it has room). Since the Guardians of the Galaxy special is expected to have a runtime of approximately 40 minutes, Werewolf by Night could follow the same format. The werewolf lore in Marvel Comics and the 43-issue run of Werewolf by Night in the 1970s provides plenty of exciting source material for Marvel to work with if and when it brings Jack Russell to life on the small screen.

Marvel Comics Jack Russell AKA Werewolf by Night

In the comics, Jack Russell struggled mightily with the werewolf curse and spent much of his time as a drifter. When his werewolf side emerged, he was able to serve as sort of an anti-hero figure who maintained some degree of control over his actions, allowing him to enjoy team-ups with characters from different corners of the Marvel Universe, including Iron Man, Moon Knight, and Spider-Man. The MCU could introduce werewolves and adapt these aspects of Werewolf by Night by sending him to different places while he looks to remove the curse and avoid trouble.

Furthermore, Werewolf by Night would stand to be a unique and fitting addition to the MCU, especially in regards to the growing importance of supernatural elements and the fact that it would give Marvel its first true horror series. The character meshes well with what Marvel is doing with Blade and Moon Knight, which means that a TV show focused on him would further deepen that side of the MCU. A Halloween special, on the other hand, would add werewolves to the mix, but would be unfortunately limited in terms of what it can do with the concept.
