We’re The Millers was the surprise box office hit of 2013, but the latest We're the Millers 2 updates haven't been looking good. Road trip comedy We’re The Millers was directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and starred Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston. Sudeikis plays small-time pot dealer David who gets roped into smuggling a huge amount of marijuana from Mexico into the U.S. by his supplier Brad Gurdlinger (Ed Helms). So as not to look too suspicious, David ropes in his neighbors – stripper Rose (Aniston) and awkward teenager Kenny (Will Poulter) – along with teen runaway Casey (Emma Roberts) to pose as his wife and kids.

Off “the Millers” trot to Mexico, but things don’t go entirely as planned after they run into vacationing DEA agent Don (Nick Offerman) and fall afoul of drug lord Pablo Chacón (Tomer Sisley). On the upside, however, the ragtag group grow to like each other along the way, becoming a sort of dysfunctional pseudo-family. We’re The Millers wasn’t a massive hit with critics but performed brilliantly at the box office, grossing just under $270 million worldwide against a relatively slim production budget. A hit of those proportions surely deserves a follow-up, but We're the Millers 2 updates suggest things aren't going to plan.

The Latest We're The Millers 2 News

The main cast of We're the Millers in the RV

Despite New Line promising a sequel all the way back in 2014, We're the Millers 2 updates from stars Will Poulter and Jennifer Aniston suggest that the movie is dead in the water. Speaking with US Weekly, Poulter cast doubt on a potential reunion, though he did say he would be happy to reprise his role as Kenny "Miller" if the opportunity arose. Poulter praised his fellow co-stars from the film, citing Aniston as being almost a mentor to him. However, this is what he ultimately had to say, "I think We’re Still the Millers is probably not gonna happen."

If Poulter's words weren't disappointing enough, We're the Millers 2 updates from Jennifer Aniston all but confirm that the previously promised sequel has been scrapped. Aniston recently sat down alongside her Murder Mystery co-star Adam Sandler with Yahoo! Entertainment, and the two discussed sequels they would've been involved with, but never got made. When asked about this, Aniston immediately cited We're the Millers, and followed up with, "There was talk about that. But that one didn’t happen." Though New Line has yet to put out an official statement regarding We're the Millers 2, the main stars basically stating that it's not happening doesn't bode well.

We're The Millers 2 Isn't Confirmed

We're the Millers 2 updates initially stated that the film was happening back in 2014, but it doesn't seem like that's the case anymore. Thanks to the film’s huge success at the box office, production company New Line rushed a We’re The Millers sequel into development. Due Date screenwriter Adam Sztykiel was hired in 2014 to replace the first film’s four-man writing team and pen a follow-up tentatively titled We’re Still The Millers. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber was also expected to return, but it's been nearly a decade now, and Aniston flat-out reported that the sequel has been canceled.

We're The Millers 2 Release Date

The fake family in We're the Millers

There are no We're the Millers 2 updates regarding a potential release date. Were New Line able to go ahead with their original plans from 2014, the sequel could've received a theatrical summer release, much like its predecessor. Production on the first film was not an overly-long process, as filming began on one of Jason Sudeikis' best movies on July 23rd, 2012, and premiered in theaters on August 7th, 2013 after a showing at the Traverse City Film Festival. If by some miracle We're The Millers 2 happens, it shouldn't take longer than a year and a half since its announcement to see the light of day.

Will Poulter and Jennifer Aniston have both expressed through We're the Millers 2 updates that they would gladly return if the sequel were ever made. This means that Rose and Kenny would officially be back. The rest of the cast hasn't really spoken up, but it doesn't mean they wouldn't be involved if the opportunity arose. Hopefully, Jason Sudeikis would reprise the role of David and Emma Stone could return as Casey. Nick Offerman (Don), Kathryn Hahn (Edie), Molly C. Quinn (Melissa) could all reprise their roles if they're interested in seeing "the Millers" in hiding. Ed Helms' Brad likely wouldn't come back, as David is now in hiding.

We're The Millers 2 Potential Story

David being held at gunpoint in We're the Millers

We're the Millers 2 updates don't include a story. However, the first film does set up the potential sequel. At the end of We’re The Millers, it’s revealed David has colluded with the DEA to turn in the big-time dealers he’s smuggling marijuana for. In exchange for his testimony against Gurdlinger and Chacón, David is placed in witness protection, and as Rose, Kenny, and Casey were all witnesses they too must join him. The film closes with “The Millers” living together as a family in a nice suburban house complete with white picket fence, as the camera pans away to reveal they’re growing marijuana in their backyard.

The ending of We’re The Millers left the story wide open for a sequel – one perhaps exploring their attempts to blend into suburbia or maybe one about the enemies they’ve made coming for revenge. However, whatever screenwriter Adam Sztykiel had in mind probably won't be seen since Aniston's We're the Millers 2 updates confirm the movie has been scrapped. Unfortunately, We're the Millers is one of the many 2010s movies that deserved sequels, but a second story probably won't be told.
