Will Smith is set to star in the new documentary series, Welcome to Earth, a title derived from Smith's iconic line in Roland Emmerich's 1996 disaster movie classic, Independence Day, where Smith uttered the line after downing a hostile alien spaceship. One of the most recognizable actors of his generation, Smith is known for his roles in Men in BlackBad Boys, and I Am LegendWelcome to Earth won't be Smith's first foray into documentary filmmaking, having already hosted the previous nature documentary One Strange Rock for National Geographic and Amend: The Fight for America covering the history of the 14th Amendment for Netflix.

The series will be executive produced by director Darren Aronofsky, director of films Requiem for a DreamBlack Swan, and mother! Aronofsky previously executive produced One Strange Rock marking it as the second collaboration between him and Smith. Aronofsky's work is characterized by its environmental themes, with mother!, in particular, being an allegory for the callous destruction of the Earth.

Now, Disney+ has tweeted the new trailer for Welcome to Earth, showing Smith and his guides visiting many exotic locations, with plenty of footage of rare animals and pretty environments. The title, though a reference to Smith's line in Independence Day, carries a whole new meaning as an invitation to the audience to explore what the Earth has to offer, rather than a statement of ironic hostility like it was in the film. Welcome to Earth is still being produced by National Geographic, a collaboration with Disney+ since the former's purchase by the latter. Check out the trailer below:

Smith is having a busy end of the year, as he is already garnering Oscars buzz for his performance in the upcoming King Richard, a biopic about Richard Williams, father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. He is also slated to star in Emancipation to be distributed by AppleTV+ in 2022. Smith is known for putting everything he has into the work he does on screen, and it will be interesting to see him take on the upcoming docuseries, especially with Smith nervously saying, "I'm throwing myself into the unknown" in the trailer above.

With such a varied career behind him, Smith has emerged as one of the most highly sought after performers working today. With the underwhelming show at COP26, it's clear that if environment action is going to take place, it's up to ordinary people to decide if the planet is worth saving, and with documentaries like Welcome to Earth, hopefully a few more people will take up the cause. With all his fame and status, it's important to see the Wild Wild West star collaborating with one of the industry's most active environmental advocates. If nothing else, it's sure to be an impressive and thrilling adventure in Disney+'s Welcome to Earth.
