The Welcome to Plathville star Lydia Plath has been getting criticized by fans, over the costume that she wore during a Civil War re-enactment. Lydia posted on Instagram about her Civil War cosplay, and followers weren't impressed. It seems like she has gotten herself involved in her biggest scandal yet. She attempted to cosplay the American Civil War, but failed to account for a number of things.

Welcome to Plathville fans have always considered Lydia the most peaceful of the adult Plath kids, until now. She is still the one who has yet to branch out by leaving Kim and Barry Plath's home, and she shares many of her parents' views. Lydia doesn’t like to disappoint her parents, and usually follows their advice when she needs to make decisions. Since Kim and Barry are in the middle of a divorce, Lydia has stepped up to help. She's doing all that she can to ensure that the household runs smoothly, especially by assisting the younger kids during a very challenging time.

Although she is not always in the spotlight when it comes to getting backlash from Welcome to Plathville fans, her cosplay got her there. While claiming to be re-enacting the American Civil War, Lydia said "oh yes," when a commenter described the event as "fun." That triggered a range of negative feedback on a Reddit post by u/T0vas-m0m. Fans tried to explain to her that re-enacting such a time period should be done with a certain level of respect. They thought that characterizing the activity as pleasant was disrespectful to the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives during the war, as well as others who were affected by it. Seeing as the war was fought for the emancipation of slaves, this was a precarious time in American history, which was anything but lighthearted. Fans believe that Civil War re-enactments should be serious learning experiences.

Were The Welcome To Plathville Stars Costumes Offensive & Inaccurate?

Lydia's reaction to the cosplay was not the only thing that Welcome to Plathville fans did not like. She may have called it a re-enactment or cosplay, but their costumes were perceived as wildly inaccurate. Few Redditors appreciated what the attendees wore. One of them, u/JulieCrone, said, "I can’t even call this ‘farby’ (reenactor speak for bad garb). This is just southern neo-confederates playing bad dress up." This opinion seemed to be the consensus. People felt that she was dressing like a slave owner from the American Civil War era, and thought that was an epic fail. Then, there were the men, One of them was wearing denim trousers, and all three of them looked more like cowboys. They didn't look like soldiers who were fighting for their side.

In the cosplay, Lydia was joined by her younger sister, Amber Plath. Welcome to Plathville fans are giving Amber the benefit of the doubt, believing that she did not know any better. Seeing as the younger Plath kids are being homeschooled by their mom, with help from Lydia, they may have a lot to learn. Fans are hoping that they will educate themselves after all of this backlash. Whether that will happen remains to be seen.
