It's one of the most successful animated shows ever made, with something for kids and adults to enjoy. However, the more anyone sits and analyzes SpongeBob SquarePants, the realization happens: the show and the movies are downright bizarre, even for a cartoon series.

One of the biggest sources of weirdness is its characters both in the main cast and on the sidelines. Across the many seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants, the creators have introduced many citizens and denizens of Bikini Bottom; some of which are enough to make even adults tilt their heads.

Old Man Jenkins

Old Man Jenkins in Spongebob Squarepants

Typically, Old Man Jenkins is nothing more than an elderly man who is as kind as he is senile. However, what makes him so strange is the fact that he never looks the same. Across the many seasons, Old Man Jenkins has had more faces than The Doctor from Doctor Who.

In one episode he'll be a skinny and tall farmer and then in the next, he'll be a nearly blind and short fish being eaten by a seahorse. This recurring character has become one of the most famous side characters in all of the show's history.

SpongeBob SquarePants

For every episode in which the titular character is depicted as a cute and naive young man living life to the fullest in Bikini Bottom, there are episodes where he is strange. In some episodes, SpongeBob is depicted as so addicted to his job as a fry cook that he can't even exist without it.

His obsession with Squidward will either result in many cute moments between the two or make SpongeBob look more akin to a stalker than a friendly neighbor. SpongeBob will also fall into the influence of things around him, thus making him take things to the extreme, such as when he dated a Krabby Patty or thought of himself as an entertainer due to a commercial.

Sage The Sage

Keanu Reeves as Sage The Sage in SpongeBob SquarePants Sponge On The Run

All three SpongeBob movies and the show feature hilarious guest stars for SpongeBob to interact with. In The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run, he and Patrick meet a mystical tumbleweed. It is none other than Keanu Reeves portraying the tumbleweed named Sage who happens to be a wise sage made out of sage.

The fact that it is Keanu's face inside a tumbleweed in a SpongeBob product is bizarre on its own, but there is no explanation as to who he is or where he came from. He just shows up and becomes a guide for SpongeBob and Patrick Star's journey. Throughout Sponge On The Run, he slowly gets more and more impatient with them and it's just too strange yet funny to see John Wick with these characters.

The Gorilla

Sandy and Patrick are trying to help SpongeBob get over his fear of the outdoors when the climax of "I Had An Accident" throws a curveball. A gorilla arrives disguised as Patrick, then reveals itself to begin attacking for no real reason. It's one of the most bizarre twists in a SpongeBob episode.

How does this gorilla get stopped? SpongeBob asks what a gorilla is doing underwater in the first place. The result is the gorilla (who is clearly just a man in a gorilla suit on a green screen) getting onto a horse and riding into the sunset. It's just as random as it sounds and even the writers make fun of it.

The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman in SpongeBob Squarepants

Voiced by Brian Doyle Murray, The Flying Dutchman is a recurring side character who haunts Bikini Bottom. Already, it's strange seeing a ghostly human pirate, but the Dutchman is depicted as a powerful godlike entity. He can open portals to a monster-filled dimension known as The Fly Of Despair.

In the episode "Ghost Host," one of the scariest episodes of SpongeBob, he transforms into images that are straight out of classic horror movies. Somehow none of this is as strange as the fact that the Dutchman requires a sock in order to eat and has a perfume department aboard his ship.

Granny

Granny chasing Gary The Snail down the street with cookies and deviled eggs in Have You Seen This Snail of SpongeBob SquarePants

In what is usually called the saddest episode of the series, Gary runs away from home only to be taken in by what appears to be a sweet elderly woman. Other than her being a bit senile and loving to cook for him, nothing seems to be wrong until Gary discovers a closet filled with the many shells of dead snails.

Instantly, "Have You Seen This Snail?" transforms into a horror story. It's implied that this mysterious Granny either feeds the snails to death or she fattens them up to eat them. Either way, the 180-degree tonal shift and the revelation are enough to make anyone question who this character is and why is she suddenly an even worse villain than Plankton.

Fred

Fred hurting his leg in SpongeBob

Carnage tends to happen in Bikini Bottom and if viewers listen carefully, there is usually a man yelling, "My leg!" This is always from the same character known simply as Fred. For many seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants, it was simply a running gag that always got a laugh out of fans.

The gag was so famous that in Season 11, Fred was given his own episode which gives a reason for why his leg is always being broken. It's an endearing yet hilarious story that gives answers to questions, but those answers end up turning Fred into a bizarre fish.

Tom

Tom confronting SpongeBob and Patrick in Chocolate With Nuts of SpongeBob SquarePants

Sometimes known as The Purple Shirt Guy but mainly known as The Chocolate Guy. In the episode "Chocolate With Nuts," SpongeBob and Patrick attempt to sell chocolate bars. Their first customer turns out to be Tom who roars out the word "chocolate" at the top of his lungs repeatedly. Throughout the episode, Tom chases SpongeBob and Patrick, continuing his war cry of "Chocolate!"

It isn't until the end it's revealed that he wants to buy all of their chocolate. It raises many questions: why didn't he just tell them that in the first place? Why is he so obsessed with chocolate? What is he going to do with all of that chocolate? It is never explained and never comes up again in another episode.

DoodleBob

DoodleBob taking the magic pencil from SpongeBob and Patrick in Frankendoodle of SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob and Patrick acquire a magic pencil from the human world which makes anything they draw come to life. One of these creations is a clone of SpongeBob who turns out to be more villainous than expected. He goes on a spree using the pencil to create havoc in Bikini Bottom.

However, DoodleBob makes it personal when he tries to erase SpongeBob and take over his life. It's a rather dark character and what makes him so strange is that it's unclear what his motivation is. The ambiguity of DoodleBob and the bizarreness of the magic pencil are what help make "Frankendoodle" one of the most beloved SpongeBob episodes.

Mary's Mother

Mary's mother in a wheelchair in Chocolate With Nuts of SpongeBob SquarePants

Also from "Chocolate With Nuts", SpongeBob and Patrick try to be suave by asking an older woman if her mother is home. That's when the audience is introduced to possibly the oldest citizen of Bikini Bottom who is essentially a decaying skull and spinal cord in a wheelchair.

How this was not considered too graphic for television is a mystery. There may not be blood or gore but it's a disturbing sight that left many audiences laughing as well as confused. She doesn't even have eyes or limbs, so how does she move the wheelchair? It's still a mystery left unsolved in SpongeBob.
