Weird Al gave some notes to Daniel Radcliffe for the satirical biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and they make the movie even better. Radcliffe plays the singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, actor, and author Weird Al Yankovic in the new parody biopic of Yankovic’s life. Releasing on The Roku Channel on November 4, the Weird: The Al Yankovic Story cast also includes Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento, Quinta Brunson as Oprah Winfrey, musical creator Lin-Manuel Miranda as Michael Jackson, and Yankovic himself as Tony Scotti, who can be spotted in the trailer.

According to Daniel Radcliffe himself (via GQ), Weird Al offered notes to help prepare for the role, but these were only focused on the musical side of Al's story, giving Radcliffe free rein over the actual characterization of Al. This creative liberation makes Weird: The Al Yankovic story even better. Although Weird: The Al Yankovic story is about Yankovic and his life, the movie intentionally leans into being a fictionalized depiction and is more aimed at parodying other biopics. Weird Al giving advice to Daniel Radcliffe that focuses purely on lyrics and music is typically hilarious, but also sets up a perfect balance to include real elements of Weird Al’s life without following the musician documentary movie formula that is rife at present.

Why Weird Al's Notes Prove The Movie Won't Be Another Documentary Film

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story; Roku

Weird Al’s notes to Daniel Radcliffe prove Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will definitely not be another documentary film, mainly because Weird Al has no specifications for how Radcliffe’s version of him should be portrayed. Musical biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody have proven hugely successful and, although not entirely truthful, Rami Malek spent hours on preparation each day to make sure he was representing an accurate Queen and Freddie Mercury story (via BBC). Similarly, other musical biopics such as Rocketman and Elvis focus on telling the audience real details of their star subject’s lives alongside all their highs and lows with as much accuracy as possible.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is doing the complete opposite. Radcliffe's performance is loosely based on Weird Al and his story, but there is barely any truth to it whatsoever. Weird Al’s notes to Radcliffe emphasize that point, demonstrating how Weird Al holds little regard for how he is represented onscreen because Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will be economical with the truth. Although Radcliffe will be embodying his personality and his fame, Weird Al is evidently not bothered about including smaller details for the sake of realism.

Weird Al's Trust In Radcliffe Proves He's The Perfect Casting

Rainn Wilson; Dr Demento; roku

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story may not be realistic in chronicling the events of Weird Al’s life, but Weird Al trusting Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe to bring this version of him to the big screen proves Radcliffe is the perfect casting. Weird Al's lack of notes to Radcliffe shows his only concern is making sure his music, the main reason for his success, is faithfully represented and will not lose any of the originality or comedic value Weird Al infused within it. Although the project is largely a parody, Weird Al is still personally being represented in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and his trust in Daniel Radcliffe to effectively craft that alternate version of himself justifies the actor's casting.
