Daniel Radcliffe’s highly-anticipated movie WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story officially wraps filming. The real Al Yankovic first rose to fame in the 1980s with a string of novelty songs that goofed on Top 40 hits from the likes of Madonna, Michael Jackson and Dire Straits.

But instead of fading from the music scene like most parody acts do, Weird Al endured and indeed may be as popular today as he was back in the ‘80s. Now the full story of how that all happened will be told in a film co-written by Yankovic himself along with director Eric Appel. WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story stars Harry Potter's Radcliffe in the lead role alongside Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, Rainn Wilson as the legendary Dr. Demento, Toby Huss as Nick Yankovic and Julianne Nicholson as Mary Yankovic.

In the latest bit of good news for Weird Al fans everywhere, the man himself just took to Instagram to announce that filming has indeed wrapped on the highly-anticipated WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story after 18 days. And perhaps somewhat optimistically, Yankovic includes an “Oscar bait” hashtag in his announcement caption (the movie is actually set to be released on The Roku Channel). Yankovic’s “Oscar bait” caption is obviously a typically Weird Al-style goof on the popularity of biographical movies like Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody that center on iconic music stars. But while Oscars may not actually be in the cards for WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that the film could lead to small screen awards buzz for star Radcliffe, who definitely seems to be stepping outside his comfort zone by putting on a Hawaiian shirt and picking up an accordion to play the most famous of all musical parodists.

It remains to be seen if Radcliffe ultimately stands on a stage clutching a trophy for playing Yankovic, but there’s no doubting that awards organizations love musical biopics and the performances they showcase. Of course WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story figures to be a different sort of biopic given the wackiness of the main character and the fact that Yankovic himself contributed to the script. It’s not yet known though if the film will present a straight-forward awards-garnering depiction of Yankovic’s life or will fully embrace the style of off-the-wall humor Yankovic has showcased throughout his career, not just in his musical projects but in movies like the cult classic UHF.
