The Weinsteins want an 'Edgy' 'Fraggle Rock' Movie

The Weinsteins are searching for a new screenwriter who can deliver an 'edgier' version of the Fraggle Rock movie. But what does the film's director have to say about this?

If you’re anything like me, the only thing that bothered you about the old Fraggle Rock television show was that it wasn’t gritty enough. When they announced that a movie was in the works I hoped and prayed that they’d go The Dark Knight route and really ground the Fraggles in reality.

Of course I’m being sarcastic, but unfortunately the Weinstein Brothers are not. They’re searching for a new screenwriter for Fraggle Rock because the last draft wasn’t “edgy enough.”  It’s the latest (and possibly most extreme) example of Hollywood’s recent obsession with that term in a post-Dark Knight world.

The offending draft of Fraggle Rock was written by Corey Edwards (Hoodwinked!) who is also still attached to direct . He recently took to his blog, Corey's Curiosities, to vent his frustration over the situation. First he addresses the dubious manner in which the Weinsteins began their search for a new writer:

“I'm a big boy -- I can take the blow if my skills are not up to the high, high standards of the Weinstein Company (he said with too much sarcasm in his voice). But this is happening behind my back, without consulting me or even asking my opinion. I enjoy working with other writers and have no doubt that the RIGHT person could help make any script better. But to not even ask me? Adding insult to injury, the search is basically an open assignment. This means the net has been cast wide, virtually posting in the "classifieds" of the movie business. The Fraggles do not deserve such treatment.”

He goes on to lambaste their notes on his script:

“'EDGY.' That's the note. That's what they are trying to do to the Fraggle Rock movie. EDGE it up! Let me say right now that 'edgy' is one of my least favorite words. Since my earliest days in the client video business, 'edgy' has been a sign of someone who doesn't know what they want. Not only is 'edgy' a nebulous, abstract word that means something different to everyone, but it chases the immediate whims of pop culture. WHAT is edgy?? Faster edits? Rock music for the score? Boober wearing some gangsta bling? I have no idea. What I DO know is that the word 'edgy' should not be anywhere near this movie.”

While the Weinstein’s have no doubt made an already awkward situation even worse, part of me wonders if this guy is still going to have a job when the brothers catch wind of his comments (your guys reading this?). Hopefully they can sort this out because regardless of how you feel about a Fraggle Rock movie, comments like this show that Edwards definitely has his heart in the right place:

“I have said repeatedly that I will do my very best to make this Fraggle movie relevant and modern, to compete with everything else out there. But what I will NOT do is sabotage what made the property beloved in the first place.”

The Fraggle Rock movie, which finds the Fraggles leaving their subterranean dwelling and venturing out into our world, was supposed to hit theaters sometime in 2011 but currently has no set release date.

What do you think about this development? Just for fun, how would you make the Fraggle Rock movie "edgier?"
