Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 23, 2010

This week:

The box office sees green as Shrek attacks the top spot; Alfred Molina joins Taylor Lautner in Abduction; Juno Temple has signed onto The Three Musketeers; Cinderella wears Prada; Gerard Butler is the latest star to be Born; MTV goes howling mad for Teen Wolf; plus lots more!Shrek: Forever After led the box office charge over the weekend. The 3D ogre tale managed to scrape in roughly $72 million worth of green. While the film's opening isn’t a disaster, it is a lacklustre debut for the pricey animated film and it’ll need good legs and strong international grosses to turn a profit. It looks like this really might be forever after for Shrek!

Iron Man 2 was in second place with an estimated $27 million. The Robert Downey Jr. adventure has now amassed a grand total of $251 million. Will it out gross the first film? Stay tuned.

That other greed-clad forest dweller, Robin Hood, dropped to third place with a weekend take around $18.5 million. The Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe team-up has now banked almost $67 million. It’ll need to keep a steady flow of audiences if it wants to get across $100 million.

Letters To Juliet delivered another $9.5 million for a $22 million total. It looks like this romantic drama just might be a first class sleeper hit!

MacGruber failed to ignite audience interest on its debut. The SNL skit turned movie managed a weak $4.5 million. Though, it should have a solid life on DVD and cable.

Just Wright is still going the wrong direction in its second week. The film managed another $4 million for a $12 million total.

Date Night managed to claw in another $3 million over the weekend. The Tina Fey/Steve Carell combo has now grossed an impressive $90 million. Expect Fox to hold out until it crosses the century mark.

Movie News

1. Alfred Molina has signed on to star opposite Taylor Lautner in Abduction.

According to Deadline:

"Molina will play a dogged CIA agent who is one step behind Lautner but determined to bring him in alive.”

I assume that Molina will spend more time with his shirt on than Lautner in the John Singleton directed thriller.

Molina will next be seen next in two blockbuster Disney films: The Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

2. Juno Temple has signed on to play the Queen in Paul W.S Anderson’s 3D retelling of The Three Musketeers.

Temple will join an already impressive cast including: Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Matthew Macfayden, Christoph Waltz, Mads Mikkelsen, and Milla Jovovich.

There’s a Paul Anderson/Dumas joke floating around in my head somewhere. I just can’t get to it!

3. Disney has started development on a new version of Cinderella from Devil Wears Prada writer, Aline Brosh McKenna.

The update of the classic fairy tale is expected to follow in the (glass) heels of Disney’s successful 3D take on Alice In Wonderland.

I’m sure that it’ll fit nicely alongside the studio's development of Maleficent - a potential starring vehicle for Angelina Jolie.

4. Gerard Butler is the latest actor to be rumored as the the male lead in A Star Is Born.

The romantic drama has had Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Rusell Crowe all attached at one point – with the female lead expected to be filled by Beyonce Knowles.

Given the film's track-record, I wouldn’t hold my breathe for this one just yet.

5. MTV has given the green light to a Teen Wolf series.

It’s expected that at least 12 episodes of MTV's Teen Wolf series will be produced. The show is based on the 1985 Michael J. Fox film - though the synopsis sounds more like a re-imagining than an extension of the original concept:

According to Deadline:

“It revolves around Scott McCall a dorky high-school student who gets a rush of new powers, including the ability to attract girls, after a wolf attack.”

Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed and Dylan O'Brien will star in the show.
