Netflix's Wednesday gives a supernatural spin to its iteration of the iconic Addams Family by making its Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) a psychic with abilities affected by her dark, macabre outlook on life. Classified as a Raven, Wednesday's visions of the past and the future are potent and violent, as opposed to her mother Morticia's (Catherine Zeta-Jones) Dove status which means that her visions skirt around the positive notes of life. While it makes sense that mother and daughter share similar supernatural abilities, the existence of another psychic, Addams puts into question where Wednesday's hereditary powers come from.

Wednesday season 1 only had time to cover Wednesday and Morticia's supernatural abilities in the Addams Family (save for Fred Armisen's Fester Addams' electrokinesis), making it easy to assume that Wednesday's powers came from Morticia's family line. However, Goody Addams being characterized as a Raven like her descendant, and revealing herself to be Wednesday's psychic mentor, introduces a different conversation altogether. Goody being an Addams by birth insinuates that Wednesday's powers might be more complicated than already established in Wednesday.

Wednesday's Clairvoyance Comes From Gomez & Goody, Not Morticia

Jenna Ortega as Wednesday and Goody Addams

Genealogically, Wednesday's father, Gomez, is Goody's direct descendant who carried on the Addams name to present-time Jericho. On the other hand, Morticia only married into the Addamses after she and Gomez's attendance at Nevermore Academy. Therefore, Morticia is in no way blood-related to Wednesday's witchy Raven ancestor, Goody.

Despite Morticia and her daughter's comparable seer capabilities, this minute detail dictates that Wednesday's clairvoyance doesn't come from Morticia Frump (her mother's maiden name). Instead, it comes from Gomez Addams' (Luis Guzman) line as the actual descendant of Goody Addams. This interesting discrepancy may be considered dismissible if only Director Tim Burton weren't so particular with details, so much so that he even asked Wednesday star Jenna Ortega to stop blinking during takes. With that said, the connection between Goody, Gomez, and Wednesday leaves much to be explored for Wednesday season 2, particularly Gomez's unrevealed or latent supernatural powers.

Could Gomez Be A Warlock?

Luis Guzman as Gomez Addams in Wednesday season 1

Seeing as Gomez and Morticia both attended the prestigious boarding school for outcasts, Nevermore Academy, it's more than likely that Gomez possesses powers like his wife and daughter. Goody, a psychic witch of the 1600s, and Gomez's ancestor, already clues in Gomez's monster classification as a warlock which potentially makes Wednesday Addams a cross between a witch and a seer. It's also possible that Gomez and Morticia both come from the same monster classification (witch/warlock/psychic/seer), like Xavier Thorpe's (Percy Hynes White) dad being established as a famous psychic in-world and Wednesday being psychic as well.

It's also worth noting that previous renditions of the Addams Family included Grandmama Addams (often rewritten as either Gomez's mother or Morticia's), who was either allegedly or portrayed as a witch. Adding this detail into context makes Wednesday's witchy psychic powers and Gomez's link to Goody become a meaningful nod to the spirit of the Addams Family and its tendency to skirt between darkly comedic eccentricity and its borderline supernatural themes. And while Wednesday's hereditary powers and exact blood lineage aren't as clean cut yet in Netflix's Wednesday, the inconsistencies offer intrigue to the coming-of-age detective-esque series, posing more queries for future seasons to answer.
