Netflix's hit series Wednesday continues to climb up the streaming platform's all-time list. Wednesday is a spinoff series that follows Wednesday Addams as she's sent to a boarding school called Nevermore Academy. Here, she has to deal with newfound psychic powers and a killing spree plaguing the academy and nearby town. With four episodes directed by Tim Burton, and aided by lead actor Jenna Ortega's performance, the show has quickly garnered a large following and strong streaming numbers.
After the week of December 5-11, ComicBook.com has reported that Wednesday added another 269 million hours streamed. This puts the show, at the time of this writing, at a whopping 1.022 billion hours streamed since its premiere, taking the #2 spot on Netflix's top English-language TV series of all-time list from Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Wednesday is now right behind Stranger Things season 4.
Can Wednesday Dethrone Stranger Things Season 4?
Netflix keeps track of the success of its shows throughout a four-week period, and Wednesday has one more week left. The veteran Netflix series Stranger Things currently tops the all-time charts for Netflix's English-language TV series with its fourth season, sitting at #1 with 1.352 billion hours streamed. In order for Wednesday to take the top spot, it will need to stream over 300 million hours its final week of tracking. The goal isn't that much of a stretch. Wednesday has already dethroned Stranger Things in a way with the biggest week for any English-language TV series on Netflix, streaming 341.2 million hours; the week after, it broke its own record and clocked in 411.29 million hours. While figures dropped in its third week, a new wave of good word of mouth could form and help Wednesday win the #1 spot.
Will Wednesday Be Renewed By Netflix?
What's more likely is Wednesday being renewed for a season 2. It's proved to be a commercial success and has received strong reviews from its audience. A dance scene from episode 4 has even gone viral and inspired appreciation posts and imitations of the scene's choreography, which was done by Ortega herself. What has also carried Wednesday to success is Burton's influence over the series, as its gothic, dark academia aesthetic and tropes have also proven to be a hit with viewers. While it hasn't been officially renewed by Netflix, series showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have said they have a pretty clear runway of what they want to do in future seasons.
Whether Wednesday takes the #1 spot from Stranger Things season 4 or not, it's already broken enough records and climbed up high enough on Netflix's all-time charts to be marked a success. Netflix likely won't ignore the numbers the series keeps pulling in, especially since they rival those of the streamer's biggest show. As long as the showrunners keep Ortega and Burton at the lead, Wednesday's success and demand for more should nab the season 2 renewal it's looking for in no time.
