The creators of Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, discuss why the upcoming Netflix series is far from just an Addams Family reboot. Set to release later this year, Wednesday will focus on the beloved Addams Family daughter, Wednesday Addams. First brought to life in 1964, then later portrayed by Christina Ricci in 1991's Addams Family film, Wednesday Addams will now take centre stage, with Scream star Ortega at the helm. The series will also feature the rest of the Addams Family, with Catherine Zeta-Jones set to star as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley.

Marking Tim Burton's television directorial debut, Wednesday will follow its titular character through her time at the Nevermore Academy, as she learns to harness her newfound psychic abilities. Earlier this year, a brief teaser offered audiences their first glimpse of Ortega as Wednesday, however, details surrounding the series have been kept largely under wraps. The series is also set to explore Wednesday's relationship with her kooky and lovable family, with Miles Millar and Alfred Gough serving as showrunners.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Millar and Gough discussed how it was "very important" that Wednesday did not become a reboot of the Addams Family. The creators shared that the show contains elements that touch on "what happened before" with the Addams Family, though at its core it is its "own thing." The pair continued that this was pivotal to both themselves and Burton while creating Wednesday. Check out the full quote below.

That's something that was very important to the show—that it didn't feel like a remake or a reboot. It's something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it's its own thing. It's not trying to be the movies or the '60s TV show. That was very important to us and very important to Tim.

Accompanying the interview, some exciting new photos of the cast were also shared, offering the first proper glimpse of Wednesday's Addams Family. Alongside its already impressive core cast, audiences can expect to see Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, who will take on the role of Nevermore's principal, Larissa Weems. Perhaps most exciting, however, is that the series will also welcome back Addams Family alum, Ricci, in a currently undisclosed role, with the star having praised her successor Ortega as "incredible."

With many excited to step into the macabre world of Wednesday, it's exciting to hear that the series will serve as its own standalone piece, rather than an extension or reimagining of what came before. Despite Millar and Gough's comments, however, there is likely to be some natural association from audiences who approach the show through a reboot lens. Though with a number of exciting surprises in store and a standout cast and crew to lead the way, it seems Wednesday could have much more to it than initially meets the eye.
