WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for Wednesday season 1!After revealing that Tyler is the Hyde monster, Wednesday’s villain twist also sets up a mystery regarding his mother’s time at Nevermore Academy. In addition to confirming that Ms. Thornhill is actually the killer mastermind Laurel Gates, Wednesday’s ending reveals that Tyler isn’t actually a normie, but an outcast species called a Hyde. Wednesday discovers that Tyler’s mother Francois was also a Hyde who attended Nevermore Academy with Morticia and Gomez, and that her condition became dangerous after Tyler was born. Not much about Tyler’s mom is revealed in Wednesday season 1, but her past makes Nevermore’s history with Hydes all the more curious.

While Wednesday Addams discovers the truth about Tyler’s mother going to Nevermore Academy, falling in love with the normie Sheriff Galpin, and being institutionalized after Tyler’s birth when her Hyde was activated, Wednesday still leaves much of her background unexplained. Larissa Weems reveals that she had no idea what Francois “identified as” when they were students at Nevermore, indicating barely anyone knew she was a Hyde. Since Tyler’s mother was able to keep her Hyde hidden at Nevermore Academy, Wednesday introduces another mystery regarding the Hydes being banned from the school.

Why Were Hydes Banned From Nevermore If It Wasn’t Because Of Tyler’s Mother?

Principal Larissa Weems confirms that Hydes were banned from Nevermore Academy 30 years ago, which would have been the same time that Tyler’s mother was at the school. The Nightshades notebook that Wednesday finds features an entry from 30 years ago that mentions the secret society wanting to play a more active role in sequestering Hydes, which indicates that the species was well-represented yet feared at that time. However, if Tyler’s mom being a Hyde wasn’t known by active students like Larissa Weems, then Francois likely wasn’t the reason why Nevermore banned the species.

Since Tyler inherited his Hyde from his mother, he likely has more family members with the same condition. If so, they may be ones responsible for the species’ expulsion from Nevermore 30 years ago. The Nightshades notebook indicates that Nevermore used the “Bradbury Tower” to sequester Hydes, so Wednesday’s monster twist also creates a mystery regarding what happened to this tower and if something occurred there that led to the Hydes being kicked out of Nevermore.

While Netflix has yet to renew Wednesday season 2, The Addams Family show’s record-breaking success on the streamer essentially guarantees another installment. Wednesday season 2 still has plenty of mysteries for Wednesday Addams to solve, with a pressing matter being the full extent of Hydes’ history at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday was able to piece things together through pictures, files, and Nathaniel Faulkner’s diary about the species, but the real reason why Tyler’s species was so feared at Nevermore remains unexplained.

The final scene in Wednesday’s season 1 ending sees Tyler turn into his Hyde again, hinting he may be able to escape captivity. If so, it’s imperative that Wednesday discovers all she can about his species’ history, thus learning from where Nevermore failed with isolating Hydes 30 years ago. In Wednesday season 2, the new Nightshades can pick up where Morticia’s generation left off in trying to have more control over the treatment of Hydes, perhaps even finding a way to safely reinstate them at Nevermore.
