Wednesday costume designer Colleen Atwood shares how Wednesday and Enid’s relationship came together in their costumes. Atwood’s costumes have been praised for creating an aesthetic unique to the show but in keeping with The Addams Family franchise style. A frequent collaborator with executive producer Tim Burton, Atwood is no stranger to the supernatural comedy-horror genre that characterizes Wednesday. Atwood’s exceptional costume design has won her numerous accolades, including four Academy Awards.

In a recent conversation with People Magazine, Atwood gave some insight into how the relationship between Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) and Enid (Emma Myers) was solidified by their costumes. She reveals that their wardrobes were created “in tandem” and purposefully contrasted, with everything from hair, makeup, and fabric texture decided with the two characters side by side. While “strength in color” was emphasized for Enid’s character, Wednesday’s profile aligned faithfully to a “black and white” scheme. See more of what she shared below:

We sort of did [Wednesday and Enid] in tandem. We started with Jenna, and she came in, and we played with her hair. We did the little freckles and things that were added to make Wednesday more today, and then Enid came in. We knew we wanted to mess with her hair. Paul Hanlon brought all these wigs that had different colors in them, and we played around with colors.Tim says, 'I want it to look like [Enid] does it herself, and every week she tries a different thing, and it doesn't really work.' So that's how we got the hair and makeup going. I'd seen a picture of the concept for the set, and I wanted to keep a strength in the color. I didn't want the girliness of pastels to be expected.Enid is from the lupine branch of the family, so I used furrier textures on her that were soft, but sort of bristly. I used graphics on her that had more of a balance for the black and white on Wednesday.

Wednesday and Enid Prove Opposites Attract

Wednesday and Enid’s outfits are reflective of their starkly different personalities and outlooks. Enid’s brightly optimistic, loving disposition serves as a foil to Wednesday’s gothic, deadpan morbidness. While at times they clash throughout the series, the two roommates quickly develop a deep friendship and begin to look out for one another. Enid is crucial to Wednesday’s character development, by challenging her to evolve outside her family and respond to situations with more compassion. Fans — and the actresses themselves — are shipping a Wednesday and Enid romance, given that the two’s budding friendship outshone any of their individual flings with male love interests.

There’s no doubt that Wednesday and Enid’s relationship will be central as the show continues, as another opportunity to display Ortega and Myer’s onscreen chemistry. As Wednesday proceeds in her journey as a complicated but compelling anti-hero, Enid will be there to balance her out and rub off on her, just as she did in season 1. Wednesday season 2 will likely feature the pair navigating life back at Nevermore, with a new and unknown principal following the death of Gwendoline Christie's Weems. Rather than acting in isolation, Wednesday now has someone she trusts by her side to address any trouble that comes her way, including the mystery of whoever is stalking Wednesday and why, as previewed in the season finale’s chilling cliffhanger.

Atwood already has costume ideas for the show’s sophomore season and is excited to explore Wednesday and Enid’s bond and “ongoing dichotomy.” In addition to more iconic fashion choices, viewers have a lot to look forward to in the expansion of the Addams Family universe. Netflix has yet to confirm a new season, but with the spin-off’s critical acclaim and record-breaking ratings, it’s merely a question of when and not if. It would be a pleasant but not unexpected surprise for audiences if the eventual Wednesday season 2 announcement also includes confirmation of a season 3.
