We Own This City, the next installment in David Simon's iconic television shows about Baltimore cops, is set to premiere on HBO Max; here's how many episodes viewers should expect and when the finale will air. We Own This City follows Simon's influential creations like The Wire, Homicide: Life on the Streets, and The Corner into the often gritty Baltimore PD, this time with a focus on the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force. The limited series, portraying true events in Baltimore in the mid-2010s, includes references to Freddie Gray's death in police custody, as well as the rising crime rates of the East Coast metropolis.

Based on the book of the same name by reporter Justin Fenton, We Own This City stars Jon Bernthal of The Punisher fame, Josh Charles of The Good Wife, and Wunmi Mosaku, who viewers may recognize from Lovecraft Country and Loki. It also features several alumni from Simon's previous series, The Wire, including Jaime Hector, Dominic Lombardozzi, and Delaney Williams. The project is a particularly good fit for executive producer Simons, as he began his career as a crime reporter in Baltimore, similarly to author Fenton, before leaving the force to write books.

We Own This City will premiere on HBO on Monday, April 25th. Like all HBO Originals, the series will be released one episode per week. On the premium platform's streaming service, HBO Max, episodes are expected to be available each Monday beginning at 9:00 p.m., ET. There will be a total of six episodes of We Own This City, each approximately one hour in length. HBO Max and HBO may also provide additional "behind the scenes" commentary after each episode, as they often do for their original content.

While We Own This City returns to the familiar streets of Baltimore that audiences of The Wire and Homicide have watched for nearly 30 years, the new HBO limited series is neither a sequel or a continuation of Simon's earlier work. The Wire was an incredibly influential TV show and often depicted police brutality as a necessary evil, but it ran from 2002-2008. This will be a stark contrast to We Own This City, which must address policing with more nuance in 2022, especially in a series that focuses on the fallout from Freddie Gray's death. It should prove to be an eye-opening experience for viewers who expect We Own This City to be a continuation of The Wire.

With only six hours of content, We Own This City is bound to be jam-packed with complex themes, and HBO-quality performances. With only six episodes, viewers will be able to watch the finale of We Own This City beginning on May 20, 2022. But while short-lived, We Own This City may yet prove to be David Simon's crowning achievement as the journalist-turned-television creator addresses policing in the 21st century.
