The young daughter of early 2000s heroes Sharkboy and Lavagirl helps save the day in the first teaser for Robert Rodriguez's We Can Be Heroes. Rodriguez's movies are known for their larger than life visuals, and he's been known to dabble in both family films and more mature projects. After spending some time on the adult side with movies like Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Alita: Battle Angel, Rodriguez will return to the family-friendly sphere with We Can Be Heroes. Slated for a New Year's Day release on Netflix, We Can Be Heroes follows a group of kids who must band together to save the world after their superhero parents are abducted by aliens.

We Can Be Heroes earned special attention this summer when Rodriguez revealed it's also a standalone sequel to his 2005 film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The titular heroes of that film are included among We Can Be Heroes' ensemble, though only Lavagirl actress Taylor Dooley will return to reprise the role. Taylor Lautner is sitting this one out, though We Can Be Heroes still has quite the supporting cast backing it up. In addition to Dooley, the film stars Pedro Pascal, Priyanka Chopra, Sung Kang, Boyd Holbrook, and Christian Slater.

Earlier on Thursday, the Netflix Film Club released the first teaser for We Can Be Heroes. Though it clocks in at less than a minute, the teaser definitely showcases the movie's epic scope and offers a peek at one of its most intriguing characters: Guppy (Vivien Lyra Blair), Sharkboy and Lavagirl's daughter. Check it out down below.

Like any Rodriguez movie, We Can Be Heroes boasts plenty of colorful visuals and cartoonish CGI. That format looks to suit the movie well, as it tells the fantastical story of children who must rise up and save the day. It's fun to see established performers like Pascal and Chopra pop up, though it's clear the stars of the show are really the young cast members.

All told, We Can Be Heroes looks to fit perfectly in the world established by The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. One question has yet to be answered though: Does We Can Be Heroes take place on Planet Drool? After all, that's where Lavagirl and Sharkboy are from, yet they appear to exist in an entirely different place for We Can Be Heroes. Presumably, all questions will be answered when the movie premieres on Netflix in less than two months from now. In the meantime, expect a longer trailer to be released in the coming weeks to help properly hype it up.
