Netflix has released first look photos of its upcoming superhero movie We Can Be Heroes. The long-awaited sequel to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl was written, directed, and produced by Robert Rodriguez, who also wrote and directed the first movie. Rodriguez is also behind the 2001 family action flick Spy Kids.

Netflix tweeted the photos yesterday afternoon from its NX account, which is dedicated to "all things geek." Priyanka Chopra, Pedro Pascal, and Christian Slater are all dolled-up and ready for heroism. We Can Be Heroes streams January 1. Check out the photos below:

Rodriguez's follow-up is a standalone sequel, meaning new viewers can jump into the action without having seen Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The movie arrives 15 years after the first, so it makes sense to start fresh. Taylor Dooley is returning as Lavagirl, who is now a Lavamom. Unfortunately, the original cast's Taylor Lautner isn't reprising the role of Sharkboy, but Rodriguez has teased a Sharkdad appearance.

Pascal and Slater play members of a superhero collective called the Heroics. Chopra is Director of the Heroics, Ms. Gradenko. When aliens abduct the supergroup, their children must team up to bring them home (and save the planet, of course). Sharkboy and Lavagirl takes place inside a universe called Planet Drool, which exists in the mind of a 10-year-old boy. We Can Be Heroes supposedly takes place on Earth, but with both Lavagirl and aliens in the mix, it's hard to say how many universes our heroes will traverse.
