HBO recently aired a new original series co-created by Luca Guadagnino, who directed the acclaimed coming-of-age romance Call Me By Your Name. We Are Who We Are draws many parallels to the 2017 film, with long, tense scenes that follow the characters' emotions closely, favoring performance over dialogue to reveal emotions.

The series stars Jack Dylan Grazer, Francesca Scorsese, Chloë Sevigny, Kid Cudi, and Jordan Seamón among an ensemble cast. The characters live on an American military base in Italy, where Seamón's Caitlin explores her gender identity while Grazer's struggles to adjust to his new life in another country. Meanwhile, the 2016 US Presidential elections are taking place.

"The Supermarkets In Military Bases Are The Same All Over ... They Say They Do That So We Don't Get Lost."

We Are Who We Are Supermarket Britney and Fraser

In the first episode, Fraser is caught stalking Caitlin by her best friend, Britney. Britney is fascinated by Fraser, so she gets to know him and shows him around the base.

They go to the supermarket, where she explains that the stores are the same on every base. "Same aisles, the same stuff. Everything is in exactly the same place." Fraser then asks her if that's what she feels - lost. She just shrugs the question off, but her answer is obvious.

"I'm Looking For Stuff That Means Something."

We Are Who We Are Fraser and Caitlin Boat

Fraser is reading a book of poetry by Ocean Vuong when Caitlin asks him why he reads poetry. He explains that it's the same reason he doesn't like fast fashion. "Buy something that you think you'll like and in two months it ends up in the garbage."

Caitlin rolls her eyes at him as he explains that he wants things to be meaningful. "And the same goes for poetry; every word means something." Caitlin thinks about this for a second, then asks him if he's ever kissed anybody before. He says no, not even Mark because it "wasn't like that." When asked what he means, he cryptically elaborates, "Fast feelings."

"What Do They Say About Us?"

Fraser and Caitlin both evade the subject of their sexualities, then he asks her what people say about them. Caitlin says everyone thinks they're dating. "I think they think we're weird," he replies. Caitlin asks him if that bothers him. Again, he evades answering and instead makes her promise that they're never going to kiss."

"I Used To Be A Lot Of Things ... I Don't Know Who I Am Anymore."

We Are Who We Are Maggie and Jenny Festival

Also during the festival, Jenny shows Maggie around the town. They talk about who they are and who they used to be. Jenny mentions that "they only want [her] to make American food".

They end up in a church, where Jenny reveals that she used to be a Muslim. "I used to be a lot of things. And I stopped being a lot of things. Truth is, I don't know who I am anymore. But I like it here." Later in the series, Caitlin says something similar of Fraser when defending his reputation of being a New York fashion victim. She explains that he's not just that, he's a lot of things.

Fraser isn't too happy about this and shows up to the reception late. Caitlin asks where he's been and he, totally seriously, replies, "How do you expect me to pull off this level of Hawaiianness on such short notice?"

"After All These Years, I Still Don't Know If I Hate You Or Not."

We Are Who We Are Sarah and Maggie

Fraser has a very complicated relationship with his mothers, Sarah and Maggie. Sarah is the newly appointed Colonel of the base, which he doesn't feel too great about. For starters, he's been forced to leave his New York home.

He calls Sarah an alien sent to Earth to destroy the human race. Maggie, on the other hand, is not considered his true mom, even though she's been with Sarah and Fraser since before he was born. Sometimes he treats his moms with great affection, and at other times, he's violent, rude, and even says he hates them.

"Do You Think That Being Male Means You Know How To Shoot Guns, Or Pee Standing Up, Or Have Sh**** Facial Hair?"

Frasier shaves Caitlin's hair in We Are Who We Are

Caitlin is preparing to go on a date with Giulia, the Italian girl who met her when she was dressed as Harper. Fraser keeps insisting that Caitlin is going about the whole thing wrong, that she's being "cliché".

After trying on an outfit prepared by Fraser, Caitlin realizes with frustration that her hair is the problem. Fraser only rolls his eyes at that, and at Caitlin's attempts to glue sprinkles of hair above her lip. The teens' relationships to gender is a continuing theme in the show, and how they identify with or perceive genders is a divisive and very interesting topic.

"That's Kind Of Unidyllic -Unusual For Our First Date - I Mean For Our First Whatever."

We Are Who We Are Jonathan Farm

After receiving a gift from Fraser, Jonathan decides to take him out and get to know him better. Fraser assumes that it's a date, even though Jonathan is much older than him and is under his mother's command.

Jonathan shows him a place where fifty thousand unknown soldiers were buried, which Fraser thinks is a little strange for their first date. He fumbles with his words, not sure if it really is a first date. Jonathan laughs and mocks him, "First whatever," shoving his hand into Fraser's face.

"Have You Been Watching The News, Martin? The People Want A Leader Who Can Make Tough Decisions."

The series is set against the backdrop of the 2016 US elections. Sarah stays up late on the night that news networks announce Donald Trump's election as the next President of the United States of America. She doesn't seem pleased with the news.

That same night, she gets a call alerting her of the death of three soldiers. One of them is Craig. The families come together for a memorial service, where she is questioned about sending the troops too early. She defends her decision, saying that the soldiers were ready and no amount of training would have changed the outcome.

"I Used To Think I Could Escape This S***hole Town ... Now I See There Is Nothing ... Nothing, Nowhere."

We Are Who We Are Enrico

After the group hears of Craig's death, everyone except for Fraser goes back to the Russian villa to commemorate him and grieve together. The mood is somber, to say the least. Enrico struggles to voice his emotions, especially in English and asks Valentina to help him translate.

He explains that he had dreamed of leaving the base and the small town of Chiogga, but as he's grown older and seen what happens to others who leave, like Craig, he's changed his mind. They are already living their lives, and there is nothing greater "out there". This quote perfectly encapsulates the feeling of growing up, the awful realization that comes with coming of age.
