Yadira Guevara-Prip has landed a regular role in the Supernatural spinoff Wayward Sisters. Although the first attempt to expand this long-running fantasy franchise in 2013 was a failure, The CW's second bite at the cherry seems to be gathering considerably more pace. Centered on the popular character of Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Wayward Sisters will tell the story of Mills' impromptu adoption service for girls orphaned by paranormal nasties. The spinoff will also feature former vampire slave Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), the daughter of Castiel's vessel Claire Novak (Kathryn Love Newton) and hapless cop Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster), all of whom have appeared previously on Supernatural.
Unlike the aborted Bloodlines spinoff, Wayward Sisters is getting plenty of support from the main series. The most recent seasons of Supernatural have included a number of episodes that set-up Jody Mills as both a hunter in her own right and a guardian to her ragtag group of misfit teenage girls.
The latest addition to the Wayward Sisters cast comes in the form of Yadira Guevara-Prip who will be playing a character by the name of Kaia Nieves. Kaia will be first introduced in the forthcoming thirteenth season of Supernatural. According to EW, this new character will be a strong yet troubled soul:
"She lost her family at a young age. By the time she reached adulthood, she was on her own, completely disconnected from her roots, as she tried to understand a burgeoning gift. In her dreams, Kaia walks between worlds – a rare and terrifying power she experiences only as a curse – a power she doesn't understand and can't yet control. Flinty, sarcastic, and profoundly haunted, Kaia is nevertheless strong and wilful as hell – she's had to be to survive this long on her own."
Reading between the lines, it can be assumed that Kaia will be picked up by Sam and Dean and the brothers will eventually take her to Jody, adding to her ever increasing list of hormonal lodgers. The youngster's ability to walk between worlds sounds particularly interesting and would be a gift that not many humans in the Supernatural world have displayed thus far. Furthermore, Wayward Sisters has already cast their resident psychic in the form of Patience Turner (Clark Backo), suggesting that Kaia's powers will be different from the usual crystal ball, eye rolling schtick.
With one failed spinoff attempt already under Supernatural's belt, it's easy to be somewhat skeptical about Wayward Sisters' chances of success - and some may argue that without the core trio of Sam, Dean and Cass, Supernatural simply can't prosper. However, with much-loved characters such as Jody Mills on board and a premise that lends itself better to established Supernatural lore, Wayward Sisters seemingly has a far better chance of being picked up for a full season than Bloodlines ever did.
In addition to all that, one of the foremost critiques of Supernatural is the way it handles female characters. Perhaps this Y-chromosome free spinoff will allow that criticism to be addressed.
Supernatural season 13 premieres October 12th on The CW.
