Collider recently had a chance to speak with Watchmen director Zack Snyder at a Warner Bros. promotional event for the 300 and Watchmen: The Director’s Cut Blu-rays. After the event, Collider had a chance to sit down with Snyder and talk a little bit about Watchmen.
The big reveal: Watchmen: The Director’s Cut will be getting a limited theatrical release this July! After all the debate about whether Snyder’s film was a fantastic achievement or a flaming disaster, Watchmen fans (or those still on the fence) will have a chance to get the full experience that Snyder intended – that is, if they live in the right city.
Watchmen: The Director’s Cut is putting the “limited” in “limited theatrical release”. According to Snyder, the three-hour cut of the film will only be shown “the weekend before Comic-Con in Los Angeles, Dallas, Minneapolis, and New York.” The film will only be screened for one weekend, and only in one theater in each city – so as you can imagine, scoring a ticket to the event could be a challenge.
While the limited run of Watchmen: The Director’s Cut may be disappointing news to some fans, I totally understand it from a financial perspective. After all, how many moviegoers are REALLY looking for another chance to pay ticket prices for a screening of Watchmen? Those that are eager will treat the event like a holy mecca and make the trek to the closest city; one weekend is the perfect amount of time to get everybody who wants to see it in the theater and keep each screening relatively packed.
Of course, if you don’t feel like making the trek to a theater but still want to see the director’s cut of Watchmen, you can wait for the Blu-ray to hit stores on July 28, 2009. There’s also still a suppossed “ultimate cut” of the film – the director’s cut spliced with footage from Tales of the Black Freighter – on the horizon.
What do you think of Watchmen: The Director’s Cut being shown in theaters? Will you be in attendance?
According to Snyder’s claims, Watchmen: The Director’s Cut will be screened in select theaters the weekend of July 17-19, 2009.
