Marvel has revealed that the Watcher's people not only despise him currently, but have loathed him ever since his very first appearance in the Fantastic Four comics. Uatu the Watcher is one of the most powerful characters in comics continuity, but rarely actually uses his powers to aid humanity - or anyone else. He and the rest of his kind have taken a solemn oath never to interfere with the goings-on of "lesser" beings - but previews from Reckoning War: The Trial of the Watcher #1 reveal the powerful protagonist is a permanent pariah among his people.

The Reckoning - a species once thought dead - have emerged once again to terrorize the universe. Long ago, the Watchers watched in horror as a species to whom they provided aid and guidance nearly conquered all of space; the Watchers were forced to erect a cosmic barrier, sealing off what remained of the 616 universe away from the "poisoned" space of the Reckoning. It is for this reason that the Watchers have sworn their oath never to interfere - but that hasn't stopped Uatu, who has broken his vow a shocking 300 times in current Marvel comics continuity.

In the beginning of the Reckoning War crossover event, Uatu realizes the Reckoning have somehow breached the barrier He sounds the clarion call that summons all the Watchers to one location - a seldom-seen sight that subsequently enrages Uatu's brethren. Uatu begs the Watchers to act...but they respond in the negative; because of Uatu's actions, entire galaxies go unwatched and Uatu is already known among his people as a malcontent.

Preview pages for the spin-off series reveal that Uatu's fellow Watcher chastise him for breaking his oath repeatedly - as they should - but his very first time neglecting his vow was also his most consequential. "In all your days, never had you broken your Watcher's oath more severely than when Galactus first came to devour the Earth." The Galactus Trilogy indeed began with the Fantastic Four noticing the sky aflame, but this is the Watcher's doing; his attempts to hide the Earth from Galactus are ultimately futile. The Watcher is clearly interfering from Page 1...even as he reaffirms his oath while discussing his non-interference with Galactus!

Clearly, the Watcher doesn't believe that revealing himself to the Fantastic Four and lighting the very sky on fire is a form of interference. As the story continues, the Watcher will interfere in a more direct sense, sending the Human Torch through space to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier, the only weapon that Galactus truly fears. Now the Watcher is on trial, and as the Watchers take their oaths quite seriously, Uatu's fate looks quite grim.
