The OnePlus 8 Pro is one of the newest smartphones to arrive and Robert Downey Jr. takes center stage in one of the first proper ads for the phone. Unlike most phone commercial, Downey Jr. brings a unique touch to the proceedings while still managing to showcase many of the new phone's selling points.

The Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes star is no stranger to phone commercials. Downey Jr. has been a brand ambassador for OnePlus since May, 2019 and has appeared in multiple OnePlus commercials before. Prior to the tenure at OnePlus, Downey Jr. was also a brand ambassador for HTC. Again, regularly appearing in or narrating the company's commercials to promote smartphones like the HTC One M9.

The new OnePlus 8 Pro commercial appears to have only been released in Asia so far, and shows Downey Jr. in various situations throughout the day, including before work, shooting on set, shopping for clothes, and heading to a pool party which eventually results in a water fight. Each of these events are specifically used to highlight a different selling point for the new OnePlus phone, such as wireless charging, 5G, 120Hz display, NFC payments, HDR video recording, and IP68 certification.

Downey Jr. Showcasing Expensive OnePlus Phone

While the features shown in the commercial are designed to highlight the reasons why a consumer should buy the phone, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the more expensive OnePlus phone. The Pro version costs $899 in the US and this compares to the standard OnePlus 8, priced at just $699. Although the OnePlus Pro is competitive with premium phones from Apple, Samsung, and Google at this price, it does make the Pro model the most expensive smartphone to come from OnePlus to date.

If opting for the standard version then buyers are less likely to have the type of experience displayed by Downey Jr. in the video with the price difference naturally reflecting the difference in features between the two models. For example, unlike the Pro version which comes with that fluid 120Hz display, the standard model’s display is 90Hz. Likewise, wireless charging and the IP68 protection against water and dust are both features only found on the Pro model. The same is also somewhat true for the camera experience, considering the Pro model is the more camera-rich of the two. Arguably, this is the biggest difference between the new OnePlus phones with the Pro model employing a quad-camera setup, compared to the standard model’s triple rear camera configuration.

Although there are many differences between the two models, there are also a number of similarities, helping to make the standard model worth buying in its own right. For example, both OnePlus 8 phones do come with 5G support, the same RAM and storage options, and also the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor. However, if you do want that full Downey Jr. experience, then the OnePlus 8 Pro is going to be the phone to go for.
