In a Reddit AMA, Watch Dogs: Legion developers divulged that a 60 FPS mode for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, is currently in development. Despite releasing just a few weeks ahead of the new consoles, the latest Watch Dogs entry never received a proper next-gen update. The production team spent the weeks and months following launch with its focus squared on ironing out bugs and other persistent issues, which culminated in the delay of Legion's multiplayer suite.

Ubisoft rolled out the online component last month for console players, though the PC version received another push to an unspecified time. Watch Dogs: Legion's free multiplayer update added several new features to the experience, including co-op game mechanics, two-to-four player cooperative missions, and a free roam co-op mode. With the latter online option, up to four players can team up and explore the city events and side quests available in Ubisoft's futuristic open-world of London. Soon enough players on the latest console hardware will get to dive into a much smoother version of the Watch Dogs: Legion experience.

Yesterday, Legion's live producer Lathieeshe Thillainathan and online director JP Cambiotti participated in a Reddit AMA. One question, in particular, asked the Watch Dogs devs about a potential Performance Mode that targets 60 FPS gameplay. According to a response from Thillainathan, a 60 FPS option is already "in development" for next-gen consoles. Fans can expect more news on that matter and New Game Plus in future Title Updates, the producer concluded.

While a specific date for the 60 FPS patch isn't yet known, fans should be pleased to learn that it is indeed on the way. Such an update could shift the flow of the game quite drastically, especially when it comes to Legion's more action-heavy sequences and gameplay systems.

Ubisoft launched the title last fall to generally middling review scores. Notably, Legion represents a big departure from its predecessors in that players assume the role of random NPCs, as opposed to stepping into the shoes of one central character like Aiden Pearce or Marcus Holloway. It's an ambitious premise that didn't exactly live up to the hype, but here's to hoping Ubisoft doesn't abandon the idea. Reason suggests Ubisoft Toronto's NPC technology would be better served in a future Watch Dogs installment that releases exclusively on curren-gen consoles and PC.
